Northwest Nazarene College in Nampa was named the Desig- nated Bicentennial Campus. Constitution Week begins Mon- day with events planned through- out Idaho to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution Seven other cities were named Designated Bicentennial Com- munities: Ashton, Coeur d'Alene, -Lewiston/Nez Perce County, Weston, Idaho Falls/Bonneville County, and Pocatello. r Towns to honor Constitution The nation this week will celebrate the 200th anniversry of the signing of the U.S. Constitu- tion, and area towns, schools and clubs are joining in with local events to help mark the occasion. Meadows Valley Meadows Valley Schools will. celebrate the 200th birthday of the Constitution today with a series of patriotic events beginn- ing at 10 a.m. A bell that has been a symbol of the Meadows Valley Schools for many years will be dedicated. The bell is displayed on a newly completed display block in front of the school. A history of the bell will be provided by Meadows Valley's senior citizens, MV Superintendent Will Spalding said. Providing the new flagpole has been installed, a flag given to the school by Sen. Steve Symms, R-Idaho, will also be dedicated and the old flag will be burned. The flag was flown over the U.S. Capitol. The elementary students, under the direction of music teacher Jeff Parnett, will sing several songs that have been sym- bols of our country's freedom and prosperity. The educational portion of the celebration will be finished off by watching the live broadcast from Washington, D.C., where na- tional leaders will join America's youths in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. Former U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice Warren E. Burger will read the Preamble to the Consititution. Children were asked to support the celebration by wearing patriotic colors, and even the hot - lunch cooks will get into the act with an all-American hot lunch of fried chicken. McCall McCall's bicentennial celebra- tion will take place on Thursday, beginning at 11 a.m. at McCall City Ha11. Then, a new walkway for the handicapped at city hall will be dedicated, symbolizing that freedom is a right of all citizens regardless of physical limitation. At 11:30 a.m., citizens are ask- ed to gather at city hall to join area Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for a march to Mill Park. the main activity of the day star- ting at noon. Introductory remarks will be made by Shirley Potter, chairman of the McCall bicentennial committee, followed by remarks from Mayor Clyde Archer. Then the scouts will plant a large blue spruce purchased by the city of McCall and 13 smaller trees donated by the U.S. Forest Service to symbolize the 13 original U.S. colonies. A reading of the Preamble to the Constitution will take place, followed by the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. Archer has declared Thursday as Constitution Day in McCall, and urged all businesses and residences to fly the U.S. flag on both Wednesday and Thursday. Also, Archer asked that anyone owning a bell, from cow bells to church bells, to ring them for 200 seconds at 2 p.m. Thurs- day. Bells across the country are - to be rung at that time as part of the national celebration. Cascade The court system will note the document of its founding during a ceremony set for 11 a.m. Thurs- co �NTvN1�1t,* A Mill Park will be the site for day in the courtroom at the Valley County Courthouse. Valley County Magistrate Darla Williamson will read a pro- clamation from Idaho Supreme Court Justice Allan G. Shepherd ordering a recess in all state trial courts at that time to com- memorate the 200th anniversary of the Constitution. All courts in the nation are been ordered to recess at that time by the Conference of Chief Justices, which consists of the highest judicial officers of the United States. Following the proclamation, a Cascade High School choir group will sing America the Beautiful. Wiliamson then will read a statement acknowledging the bicentennial and reaffirming a commitment to the principles of government enshrined in the Constitution. Valley County Bar Association President Carl Kerrick will then make remarks, and those in at- tendance will be asked to say the Pledge of Allegiance. The ceremony will conclude with Karen Houst singing The Star- Spangled Banner.
