HomeMy Public PortalAbout2014_02_25_R025 Naming the Loudoun Street Park Site - Mervin Jackson Park The Town of Leesburg, Virginia PRESENTED February 25, 2014 RESOLUTION NO. 2014-025 ADOPTED February 25, 2014 A RESOLUTION: NAMING THE LOUDOUN STREET PARK SITE WHEREAS, on January 14, 2014, Council officially designated the green space adjacent to the town parking garage on Loudoun Street as a park; and WHEREAS,Vice Mayor Mervin Jackson served the Town of Leesburg in many official capacities starting with his appointment to the Planning Commission in 1975; as Chairman of the Planning Commission from 1987 until 1999; as an appointee to the Town Council in 1999; an elected member of the Town Council in 2000 after receiving the most votes of any candidate when he was elected to a full, four-year term; as Vice-Mayor from 2002-2004; as a member of the Standing Residential Traffic Committee; the Board of Architectural Review; and the Joint Town/County Annexation Area Development Policy Committee; and WHEREAS, he served the community as an active member of the Providence Baptist Church, serving as a superintendent, church treasurer, and Sunday school teacher, and in later years at First Mount Olive Baptist Church and as a member of the Board of Directors at Monroe Bank; and WHEREAS, on February 8, 2014 the Parks and Recreation Commission unanimously recommended naming the park"Mervin Jackson Park" in honor of the late Vice Mayor Mervin Jackson. THEREFORE RESOLVED, by the Council of the Town of Leesburg in Virginia the park site on Loudoun Street is hereby named"Mervin Jackson Park" in honor Mr. Jackson's contributions to the Town of Leesburg. - 2 - A RESOLUTION: NAMING THE LOUDOUN STREET PARK SITE PASSED this 25th day of Februarys 2014. _ Kristen C.
