The move is the first feature-length film made in McCall to be released since "Northwest Passage," the 1940 movie starring Spencer Tracy, Robert Young and Walter Brennen. Featured in "Among Ravens" is Johnny Sequoyah, the granddaughter of Donnelly hat -maker Randy Priest. The move will be shown on Tuesday at Shore Lodge as part of the lodge's weekly "Dinner and A Movie" special starting at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25. The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Roxy Theatre in Cascade. The film is also available online at Amazon and iTunes. Her father, Russell Friedenberg, is the writer and co -director of the film and also appears in the movie. Sequoyah, Rae, Friedenberg and cast member Will McCormack are scheduled to attend the Shore Lodge event. "Among Ravens" follows a dysfunctional group of friends who reunite at a lakeside cabin for Fourth of July weekend and encounter a nature photographer (McCormack) who begins to affect their lives. True Inspiration The story was inspired by a similar gathering attended by Friedenberg at Payette Lake cabin about four years ago. He decided to use McCall as the film's setting, although the name of town in which the film takes place is never mentioned. The film was completed for "under a million dollars." "I just knew the heart of the story was in McCall," Friedenberg said by telephone from Los Angeles. "If you go to where the DNA of the story is, it is more vibrant." The movie was shot in various locations over 17 days in the summer of 2012 with most of the interior scenes shot in a guest cottage next to Shore Lodge. A notable exception was a parade scene that was shot in Hailey. Filming in McCall was made easier by the cooperation of the community, Friedenberg said. "The people were so kind and generous and didn't kill us on permitting or catering," Friedenberg said. He decided to use film to shoot the movie rather than use more modern, cheaper digital equipment. "The beauty on that place wouldn't have been done right on digital," Friedenberg said. "The look of the film, the saturation and coloration is unbeatable." Poor Reviews "Among Ravens" has not fared well with critics, earning a "0" rating on the Rotten Tomatoes website that compiles movie reviews. Friedenberg dismissed the negatives reviews, saying critics "are employed and get a following by being as acerbic as they can be" He is buoyed by reviews posted by viewers, which have been mostly positive. A total of 92 percent of viewer reviews on Rotten Tomatoes liked the film, while viewers on the movie website IMDb.com gave "Among Ravens" an average rating of 7.9 out of 10 as of Wednesday. Friedenberg has produced, written or acted in a dozen movies or television shows, including "Out of the Blue: A Film About Life and Football," (2007), "Trudell" (2005), "Magic Valley" (2011) and "Ass Backwards," (2013). "Idaho's gorgeous natural scenery serves as the backdrop for this terminally trite ensembler about various so-called adults coming together for a fateful Fourth of July holiday. Nicely shot, atrociously written, shoutingly acted and intrusively scored this roundelay of misery drowns itself in cliche after cliche." - Justin Chang, Variety `This is a great film filled with beauty, complex relationships, and emotions. In my opinion, the striking cinematography and Idaho nature is what separated this film from others about dysfunctional families." - Steph Claire, IMDb.com A cheap -vodka -hangover version of August: Osage County,' Among Ravens' claws itself to death with sophomoric symbolism." - Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times "The script is unbelievably tight and each scene is just utter perfection. It's phenomenally well acted and produced, and the soundtrack is spot on." - Mike Rogers, IMDb.com "The pretty Idaho locations just can't add any atmospheric heft to Friedenberg's schematic characters and merry-go-round of dysfunction, leaving the performances as a real grab bag of seriousness and silliness. There's simply nobody to care about in 'Among Ravens,' even as a case study in unhappiness and delusion." - Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times `Filmed in the incredibly beautiful wilderness of Idaho, Among Ravens' is a fun yet very emotionally compelling drama about family and human relationships." - brandonfoster05, IMDb.com http://www.mccallstarnews.com/pages/fp_stories__page.php 7/31 /2014 The Star News Groups Page Page 1 of 1 'RAVENS' IN MCcAT i -Anne Gwartney of McCall, left, gets the autograph of Johnny Sequoyah at Shore Lodge Tuesday night following a showing "About Ravens," which was filmed in McCall in 2012.
