HomeMy Public PortalAboutBrewster School Committee -- 2009-05-21 Minutes D D o (� Q U Brewster School Committee 18 %pig Minutes of May 21, 2009 Held at Eddy Elementary School Superintendent Gradone called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. ROLL CALL: - For the Committee: Steve Jones, Marie Enochty, John O'Reilly, Jennifer Rabold, David Telman - For the Administration: Michael Gradone, Denise Fronius, Keith Gauley - Others: Town officials, parents, staff, interested citizens, Dr. Richard Hoffmann AGENDA CHANGES - Solar panels will be discussed. REORGANIZATION - Marie Enochty nominated John O'Reilly to be Chair. There being no other nominations, Mr. O'Reilly assumed the chair. Marie nominated Jennifer Rabold for Vice Chair who was also voted by acclamation. B.J. Newmier was nominated for secretary and was voted by acclamation. The following representatives were voted: Payroll authorizer John O'Reilly, Alternate Jennifer Rabold, Marie Enochty—Policy Subcommittee, Dave Telman— Union/Region Budget, Marie Enochty—Negotiations, Jennifer Rabold— Cape Cod Collaborative, Dave Telman— PTA Liaison, John O'Reilly— Eddy School Council, Marie Enochty—Stony Brook Council, Dave Telman—Building Committee, and Union #54 voting members John O'Reilly, Marie Enochty, Steve Jones—Alternates Dave Telman, Jennifer Rabold. CITIZENS SPEAK- None PRIORITY BUSINESS - Administrators' Reports Denise Fronius reported that the last Stony Brook Character Trait is courage, the Rotary Club donated $700 worth of books, the children will choose a book to be read to the new class, Hats Off to Volunteers Day, 2nd graders will be going on the bus to the Eddy School for transition activities on June 5, the spring concert (Disney theme) is June 22 and the Military All-Stars will be visiting the children on June 8. Keith Gauley reported that they will welcome Dr. Hoffman tomorrow, Nancy Souder will work part-time next year in 3rd grade with the focus on math and language arts, MCAS testing, transitioning activities for 2nd graders, and gifted and talented students are being challenged. Solar Panels Town Administrator Charlie Sumner asked the Committee to consider giving permission for the Town to evaluate Stony Brook and Eddy schools for possible installation of solar panels; which could mean substantial savings. It was moved by Jennifer Rabold, Brewster School Committee Minutes—May 21, 2009 Page 2 seconded by Marie Enochty to authorize the Town to have an inspection of the schools' roofs for possible solar panel installation at not cost to the schools. Voted unanimously. Administrators' Reports (cont.) Asst. Supt. Gail Briere reported on the process and changes to the progress reports for grades 3 to 5 making all of the schools consistent. This will make it easier when the students have transitioned to the Middle School for those teachers to be looking at the same format. Supt. Gradone reported on staff reductions throughout the district with 41 people affected. The ratification of positions reduced will be on the June agenda. He also advised the Committee that Capital Lexicon is not retiring along with him at the end of this year. Dr. Richard Hoffmann expressed his happiness in being here, meeting the staff, parents and students. Building Committee It was moved by Marie Enochty, seconded by Jennifer Rabold and voted unanimously to authorize the Building Committee to act on the School Committee's behalf. It was requested to have a Building Committee Report on upcoming agendas. Consider Summer Schedule Dr. Hoffmann suggested the Committee consider a short July meeting to get to know each other. It was decided to meet July 6 at 5:30 at the Eddy Elementary School. REPORTS AND INFORMATION - none APPROVAL OF MINUTES It was moved by Steve Jones and seconded by Marie Enochty to approve the minutes of April 15, 2009 with the correct to read"November"Town Meeting (not December) under Facility Reutilization Presentation. Voted unanimously. ADJOURNMENT - It was moved, seconded and voted unanimously to adjourn, subject to paying bills, at 8:05 p.m. Respectfully submitted, B.J.
