First Winter Carnival a rousin g success 1924 event included sled -dogs, sleighs powered by airplane motors and fat ladies race' (Note: This the second in an occasional series to mark the centennial of McCall's incorporation on July 19, 1911.) By Marlene Bailey For The Star -Nms If anyone in McCall in 1924 was worried about thin ice on Payette Lake, it was not evi- dent during the town's first winter carnival. The lake served as the centerpiece for several of the carnival's events. The first McCall Winter Carnival was held Feb. 29 through March 1, 1924 and was attended by an estimated 2,000 people, including Gov. Charles C. Moore. More than $1,500 was donated by McCall businesses for winners' purses given out by the newly organized Commercial Club. The Oregon Short Line railroad arranged for special trains with sleepers attached to run from the main line to McCall during the carnival. Many residents opened their homes to welcome visitors who could not find a hotel room. Among the main events for the first carni- val were sled -dog races and snowshoe races, held on a circular track on the frozen lake that was easily viewed by spectators on shore. The big event was a 15 -mile sled -dog derby won by Tud Kent in 78 minutes, 20 seconds. There were ski races for adults and youths, men and women, ranging from 100 yards to two miles. There was even a "fat ladies race," where not only the time was recorded, but the la- dies' weight as well, and races where men and women raced wearing one snowshoe and one ski. Pulsen led to within a few feet of the finish line whenMakipassedhimto win by a narrow margin. Another favorite event of the first carnival was ski jumping, held on Black- well Hill near the current intersection of Lick Creek Road and Spring Mountain Boulevard. ' Twenty five sleighs brought visitors out to the hill where a ski jump had been built. Odin Pulsen of ` Cascade gave a remarkable jumping exhibition of 67 feet, 2 inches, while Lloyd Johnson of McCall, a 6 -year- old, jumped 15 feet. I.O. Prout, the owner of the McCall Bakery, gave two exciting exhibitions by suc- cessfully riding the ski jump on a toboggan sled, according to accounts. Another crowd - pleaser was skijouring, where horses pulled their "drivers" along on skis. In the finals, nobody finished the course, so the $40 prize money was divided among three finalists. Last, but not least, was a great tug -o -war between the men and women of Cascade and McCall. The Cascade men's team won, but the women's teams, after several minutes of fu- rious tugging, were stopped and a draw called to save a perfectly good rope. "Motor sleighs," sleds with propeller- driven air- plane motors attached, gave visitors exhilarating rides over the smooth ice - covered .expanse of the lake. A huge toboggan slide was built in the center of town and went down onto the lake along Second Street and onto the current site of Art Roberts Park. Elizabeth Brown, the daughter of state Sen. Carl Brown, was selected the first Winter Carnival Queen by popular vote.
