HomeMy Public PortalAboutr 96:131No. 96-131 Dale of Adoption I~Y 25 1996 OPPOSITION OF LEGISLATION TO MERGE MUNICIPAL GENERAL ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS INTO COUNTY BOARDS OF SOCIAL SERVICES WHEREAS, Governor Whitman has proposed a Welfare Reform Program consisting of the consolidation of the General Assistance Program from the 567 municipalities to the 21 counties with the State of New Jersey; and WHEREAS, the administration of a General Assistance Program by the County would result in additional costs to the taxpayers of the Borough, loss of case scrutiny and an increase in the number of cases; and WHEREAS, continuing with the current General Assistance Program would result in the retention of the local social service contact person, would maintain home rule, would be able to respond to the particular needs of the Borough and would be more efficient and economical; and WHEREAS, it is in the best interests of the Borough of Carteret to oppose Governor Whitman's Welfare Reform Program; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Municipal Council of the Borough of Carteret that the Borough opposes legislation to implement Governor Whitman's Welfare Reform Program insofar as it authorizes the merger of municipal General Assistance Programs into County Boards of Social Services; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be forwarded to Members of the Legislature representing the 19th District and Governor Christine Whitman.
