No problem for Winter Carnival organizers Sculptures will not be required to be made of snow (Here is an update om the 2012 McCall Winter Camival to be held Jan. 28 through Feb. 5.) Lack of snow is not going to be a problem for the 2012 McCall Winter Camival, event organizers said. Many carnival events do not need snow to take place, and there are alternatives for those events that do require the white stuff, such as the snow sculptures that are the centerpiece of the festival. The sponsoring McCall Area Chamber of Commerce is encouraging businesses and organziations to enter the local sculpture contest whether or not they use snow. "Some will be using snow, others may be creating sculptures out of lumber, recycled materials, papier- mache," camival general chair McKenzie McDonald Christensen said. "It is totally up to them!" The builder of the Grand Prize sculpture will receive $950 and the First Place prize-winner will get $800. Second place will be awarded $700, third place gets $500 and fourth place carries a $300 prize. Prizes of $125 will be given to those winning the Student Built, First -Timers, Employee -Built and Most Photogenic Awards, while the sculpture with the best Child Appeal will win $100. At the end of the camival, a $150 prize will be awarded to the best maintained sculpture, and a $200 cash prize will be awarded to the People's Choice sculpture as determined by ballots cast at the McCall Area Chamber of Commerce Office. To recifty that, Loomis will stage the Mile Hi Mindego Super Bull Series, to start at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4. The setting will be an outdoor portable arena at the comer of Sunset Street and Idaho 55 across from NAPA Auto Parts. Tickets cost $10 for adults, $7.50 for seniors, and $5 for kids under 12. Loomis is the owner of Mile Hi, a local business near Donnelly that provides bulls for bull riding to fairs and shows. Although rodeo season traditionally goes from April to October, Loomis is looking for ways to keep his bulls busy. That's when he decided to host a bull riding competition during Winter Camival. {Tow 6r 'Mr Sta•Nnvv by Kmdel Mvtm Donnelly nuleher Frank Looms feeds gram to one of las buclang bulls, I'm Yer Huckleberry, which wall wake an appearalwe In the Mile bhndego Super Bull Se1]e5 event In McCall on Feb { "We hope to bring part of our world to the city people that don't know about what we do," he said. Bull riding, a traditional rodeo sport, might seem like an odd choice for the local celebration that pays homage to snow and winter. But Loomis says the adventure and spectacle of bull riding makes it a fitting event for the camival crowds. "It's fun and interesting, something different," he said. "We want to help people understand the sport" 5 Years in the Business Loomis and his two sons, Dustin and Matt, have been raising bulls for about five years. Still relatively new to the business, they are hoping to eventually purchase the necessary certification that will allow them to contract with more prestigious rodeos and bull riding competitions. In the meantime, they have contracted with regional fairs and venues, and have put on their own shows similar to the one to be staged during the Winter Camival. Fifteen of the Mile Hi bulls, with names like "I'm Yer Huckleberry' and "Velvet Rockstar," will compete in the show. Matt Loomis will also compete as a bull rider, along with about 15 others. "We have access to good riders because not much else is going on for them right now," he said. Additional bulls will be provided by Mindego Ranch, a company in Midvale that Mile Hi has collaborated with in the past. The show will have each rider ride twice, and the high scores will advance to a finals round, meaning the audience will get to watch about 50 bull rides in all. "We want a lot of people to come," Matt Loomis said. "It's a home town show, and we want to see home town support." With an outdoor venue, Loomis said safety for the bulls and riders is paramount. The arena's floor will be covered with a fresh layer of thick dirt that will help give the animals stable footing and a softer landing for the riders. "We've never had one get hurt," Loomis said. "Our bulls have grown up in the snow. Just like us, they know to be careful." The event is still looking for sponsors. For more information, contact Loomis at 634-6536 or floom is@frontiernet. net. The Basics of Bull Riding Here are some of the basics of the sport of bull riding: • One rider is paired with one bull by luck of the draw. The rider tries to stay atop the bull for eight seconds. • If the rider falls off before the eight seconds are up, he gets a score of zero. If he hangs on, he's awarded up to 50 points based on form and execution. • The bull is also awarded up to 50 points based on how it jumps and spins. Bulls are trained using dummies to leam how best to throw a rider. • A bull that is difficult to ride will jump twice or three times, then launch into a series of spins. The more difficult the ride, the bigger the points for the animal and human. • Each bull is only ridden once per competition, so riders can be on three or four different bulls per http://www.mccallstarnews.com/pages/hcw Jeature_page.php 1 /26/2012 Star -News Features Page Page 2 of 2 • show • A bull can handle between 40 and 50 rides per year_ http://www.mccallstarnews.com/pages/hcw_feature_page.php 1 /26/2012 Star -News News Page Lead Story Page 1 of 1 Ice Age Winter Carnival Grand Prue sculpture uses tons of ice from Payette Lake "We figured we would make something all out of ice, but we weren't sure what." — John Schulz BY TOM GROTE The Star -News "Jurassic Park; featuring lumbering giants of another eon strolling through an icy landscape, won the Grand Prize in the 2012 McCall Winter Camival snow sculpture contest. The scene, at McCall Mountain Accents, collected the sixth Grand Prize for lead sculptor John Schulz in the last seven years. Schulz is now just two Grand Prize awards from going into a tie with Krahn's Home Fumishings, the all-time leader in McCall Winter Camival snow sculpting with eight grand prizes collected over the years. He previously won the Grand Prize for "Call of the Wild" (2011), "Camelot" (2009), "The Cattle Drive" (2008), "The Great Barrier Reef" (2007), and "A Bear's Den" (2006). "Jurassic Park" features a giant -jawed tyrannosaurus rex making threatening moves toward a plate -backed stegosaurus. Luckily, the potential victim will forever be out of reach of the frozen predator. Photo for the SYw-News by Id Moebr 10 tows of ice Were taken front Payette Late to form the cave, walls and sgt of"Awassfc Park- at McCall hlottutvu accents The dinosaurs were caned tvth chamsncs from hard soar' blocks The dinosaurs are seen in a primeval setting with frozen ice -block walls and a massive volcano, also made of ice. Schulz and his crew faced the same predicament as the builders of the 31 other snow sculptures entered in the 2012 contest - no snow. Creative Thinking Needed The lack of snow until just days before the start of McCall's most famous winter event forced some creative thinking. "We figured we would make something all out of ice, but we weren't sure what," said Schulz, who carves wooden sculptures with chainsaws the rest of the year. "We just wanted to make sure we had the material to work with." The team thought of the days when McCall residents would carve ice blocks from Payette Lake to use as refrigeration throughout the year. So Schulz, his brother, Carl from Spokane, T.J. Fausett of New Meadows and Ben Ormsby and Ben Gau of McCall rolled a tractor onto the foot -thick ice off the city boat ramp and went to work with their chainsaws. Soon, they had extracted 18 chunks of ice each measuring 3-by-6 feet and weighing a total of 10 tons. Then the snow began to fall in large quantities and Plan B went into effect - "Jurassic Park." Ice Blocks A Bonus "I've always wanted to do dinosaurs out of snow," said Schulz, noting that whales still remain on his sculpting bucket list. The ice blocks from the lake become bonus materials, forming the massive walls, volcano and gate that rounded out the scene. The work took on the theme of the camival, "Destination Adventure," last Thursday when warm weather set it. "Half of the head of the tyrannosaurus fell off Thursday aftemoon," Schulz said, requiring three members of the crew to work until 3 a.m. to make repairs in time for judging the next morning. In all, 300 hour person -hours were spent on the winning edifice. Having the Grand Prize sculpture in front of his business does increase visitors to his art gallery, but that is not the main motivation of Schulz, 43. "It is just the fun and pride of doing it," he said. "People are going to remember it and bring people to McCall." Schulz and his team were so impressed with the results of the ice blocks from the lake that they have planned a special all -ice sculpture for next year. He declined to reveal details in order not to spoil the surprise.
