" - Jan Morrison BY KENDEL MURP ANT For The Star -News For Jan Morrison, the greatest joy of leading the Mountain Samba drill team is bringing warmth and life to the frigid winter weather. On Saturday, the Mountain Samba dancers will make their ninth appearance in the Mardi Gras Parade through downtown McCall, the highlight of the 2013 McCall Winter Carnival. More than 30 dancers and drummers from Valley and Adams counties, and even one from White Bird, will participate in this year's parade. "We have gone through some changes over the years, but we are still the same outfit," Morrison said. Mountain Samba has performed in other local events, such as during the Fourth of July and summer music festivals, but the Winter Carnival is where the group shines. wr "I think being on foot in a parade is so very exciting and fun, especially with live drumming and percussion to move jt to," Morrison said. Morrison incorporated many of the routines and steps she learned in California and mixed it with African dance moves and rhythms provided by those in the existing McCall club. 16 Dancers To Start The first year they marched in the parade, 2004, there were 16 dancers and eight drummers. "We went from risque to enthusiastically accepted pretty quickly," Morrison said. " Kirsten used to joke that the first year we performed in the parade, mothers shielded their children's eyes as we went past them. But the next year, everyone was asking, 'Where's that samba group ?'" The first year, Morrison and others made their costumes out of pieces of cut -up parachutes, which they pair with classic McCall footwear - Sorel snow boots. "We called ourselves Samba in Sorels," Morrison said, adding, "We didn't win any awards," The next year, the group steered in a more classic samba direction with costumes and the routine. Mountain Samba has won the "Best Drill Team" award for the last eight years and have used the prize money to buy percussion instruments. A few years ago, Mountain Samba started receiving grants that enabled the group to have a master drummer and dancer visit and give workshops. On Saturday, Eduardo Mendonca will help lead the samba drummers and dancers will be led by Dora Oliviers, who held a samba workshop last weekend. "Last year, we had three mother - daughter pairs in the dancers and a father -son (pair) in the drummers," Morrison said, "We've had everyone from children all the way up to retirement age." Page 1 of 1 http://www.mccalistamews.com/pages/events—arts_page.php 1/31/2013 Page—Lead Story On the Wings of Victory Monstrous ' Smaug' snags sculptor Schulz 7th Winter Carnival Grand Prize BY TOM GROTE The Star -News " Smaug Over The Mountain," featuring the horrifying dragon from "The Hobbit," won the Grand Prize in the 2013 McCall Winter Carnival snow sculpture contest. The scene, at Holiday Inn ExpresslThe Hunt Lodge, collected the seventh Grand Prize for lead sculptor John Schulz in the last eight years. Schulz is now just one Grand Prize award from going into } a tie with Krahn's Home Furnishings, the all -time leader in McCall Winter Carnival snow sculpting with eight grand prizes. He previously won the Grand Prize for last year's "Jurassic Park," "Call of the Wild" (2011), "Camelot" (2009), "The Cattle Drive" (2008), "The Great Barrier Reef (2007), and "A Bear's Den" (2006). The dragon Smaug is the main antagonist of the story by P6oio 6v T3. Sv -New. by Nn Ye a "- gnkghthm?cenucalq. r Pp— ?Wt+ J. R. R. Tolkien, who described the beast as "a most thvbnghth - Ikghtvd: « :: Nun&, sn-kg specially greedy, strong and wicked worm." In the sculpture, Smaug hovers over the Lonely Mountain, the userped home of a race of dwarves who in the novel plot to kill the dragon and regain control of the mountain and their treasure. Magical lee Cave Those clever enough to elude Smaug during the Winter Carnival found themselves inside a magical ice cave with a colorfully lit central pillar. In one niche lurked Gollum, "a small, slimy creature" featured in "The Hobbit" story. To build the mountain, Schulz and co- workers Ben Ormsby of McCall and Ben Gau of McCall repeated a technique they used to build last year's "Jurassic Park,° which was to cut slabs of ice from the frozen surface of Payette Lake. Working with chainsaws and heavy equipment, the team extracted 52 sheets of ice eight -to -10 inches thick and measuring 3 feet by 6 feet to build the Lonely Mountain. But the slabs were too heavy to serve as the massive wings of Smaug, so the crew allowed the water in the holes they had just cut to refreeze. They waited until the new ice was four to five inches thick before making a second harvest of 18 additional slabs, Schulz said. Loaders and riggings hoisted the wings and the body of Smaug into place, with the top of the dragon's head towering 22 feet over The Hunt Lodge parking lot. The ice cave originally had a square interior, but Schulz. Gau and Ormsby assaulted the walls with sharp tools, chipping down the walls until they attained the desired natural look. The crew also worked inside the hollow central column, drilling holes for most of the individual bulbs of the colored lights. The effort spanned 10 days, mostly in ideal frigid working conditions. However, warmer weather in the hours before last Friday's judging caused some ancillary figures to be cancelled, Schulz said. On Friday, after the work was done, Schulz and his crew sat in the hot tub at the motel and watched through windows at the admiring spectators. That made the effort worthwhile, he said. Schulz said he will return next year to try for his eighth Grand Prize. "We try to get more challenging every year," he said, noting the $2,500 prize money also was a good incentive to keep coming back. " — Rich Brown BY KENDEL MURRANT For The Star-News Rich Brown worked late into the night last Thursday to finish an elaborate snow sculpture of two swordfish leaping from a frozen sea. The intricate sculpture and nine others built in Depot Park in downtown McCall were admired by visitors to the final weekend of the McCall Winter Carnival. But few of those visitors realized the sculptures were not connected to the carnival's main sponsor, the McCall Area Chamber of Commerce. The independent Idaho Snow Sculpting Championship this year celebrated its 26th year of bringing fresh sculptures to mid -week visitors of the Winter Carnival. But the contest's organizers worry that dropping participation and sponsor funding may threaten the popular event. "I think people don't realize we need their help," said Brown, who won first prize in this year's contest as well as the 2012 contest. "Even h they enjoy the sculptures and come back year after year after year, they think someone else is taking care of it," he said. The contest was started by McCall residents Hal and Jane Sager, who wanted an attraction to extend the carnival from a three-day event to a week -long affair. Today their daughter, Diane Wiegand, chairs the contest and has a fierce desire to see it continue. Sponsors Dwindling "It's common now for visitors to come the first weekend and stay 'til the middle of the week, or for people to come up mid - week," Wiegand said. "It's been a big help for McCall's economy." Wiegand drums up sponsorship for the event each year, which includes housing and meals for all of the sculptors and about $5,000 to cover operational costs, including $1,500 in cash prizes for the winning sculptures. Finances have been more difficult to come by in recent years. "This year, I got a last minute, surprise donation at the end that gave us what we needed,' Wiegand said. "Otherwise, we were short about $1,200 that would have come out of my own pocket." Wiegand is trying to better inform people about the event and how it is funded. 'I'd love to see more support from the businesses in town, especially those near where the sculptures are," she said. 'If funding drops off, this event could die, and I don't want to see that happen." Home -Made Chili Wiegand has helped cut operational costs by cooking a homemade meal for the sculptors rather than taking them to a restaurant. "I make chili and a couple from Boise who help sponsor the event come up and make hand - dipped com dogs," she said. There are no talent -based qualifications to enter the championship, although many of the regular entrants, mostly from Idaho and Montana, are artists and sculptors by trade. The number of participants varies depending on the space available for the sculptures. In past years, there were as many as 18 sculptures. In recent years the average has gone down to about 10, which is how many there were this year. Pamela Mooney from Boise has participated in the championship for 16 years with her mother and brother. "Everyone in McCall treats us so well," Mooney said as she worked on her sculpture of Father Time. "It's like we're celebrities for a week." "We love McCall and the people here; said sculptor Myles Hougen of Sandpoint, who has competed for 21 years. "There's great hospitality here, and it's tremendous to be with fellow artists and see their minds coming together_" http: / /www.mccallstamews -com /pages /fp_stories _page.php 2/7/2013 Events and Arts The StarNews Pasco man wins best beard award at contest The finely trimmed beard of Dave Morasch from Pasco, Wash., won him the top prize last Thursday at the Beard, Hairy & Sexy Leg Competition held at The Yacht Club as part of the 2013 McCall Winter Carnival.
