James B, Bruce Jr.
One of the "good guys" passed away on Feb. 20, 2014. James Bruce had a wonderful life that lasted
almost 94 years.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 27, 2014 at St. John's Cathedral,
807 N. 8th Street, Boise
Burial will follow at Dry Creek Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Arid Club beginning
at 2 p.m.
Jim was born at the old St Alphonsus hospital in dovvntown Boise in 1920 and he spent his
entire life in Boise aside from the time he spent away at college and during World War II.
Jun was part of the "old guard" of Boise and truly loved Idaho and all it represented. He was a true
Idahoan who loved to spend his time in the great Idaho outdoors fishing, hunting and enjoying all it had
to offer.
Jim led a life that was by all accounts full and rewarding. He attended St. Joseph's school and then
moved on to St. Teresa's academy in Boise. This was his first experience attending a school that
enrolled both boys and girls!
Jim's family owned a cabin on Payette Lake in the 1920s and 1930s and he spent his summers there
as a chid. Later on, he and his family enjoyed their vacation spot in Donnelly.
In 1936 he went to Portland, Ore., to attend Columbia Prep for one year and after graduation he
enrolled at the University of Portland
After two years at the University of Portland he spent two years at the College of Idaho where
he received his bachelors degree. He then began law school Georgetown University in Washington,
D.C.
Following the first year of law school, World War II had started and he enrolled in the Army_ He was
sent to the South Pacific and New Guinea and for the remainder of his life never had a desire to go back
to the South Pacific!
At the conclusion of the war he returned to the states and, not wanting to return to the humidity of the
East Coast, he transferred to the University of Idaho Law School receiving his JD degree in 1947.
During the period surrounding the war he met Lois Stevens of Twin Fails. Lois served in the navy
during the war. They wrote each other many letters during the war and the rest is history- They were
married Aug. 25, 1946, in St. John's Cathedral in Boise.
Upon Jim's graduation frum law sciroui he and Luis riruved back to Boise where he would begin his
career in law and raise a family.
He worked for a couple of years in the Ada County Prosecuting Attorney's office and, after a brief time
spent in private practice, he accepted an offer to go to work for Idaho Power Co. in 1951.
He spent the next 34 years with Idaho Power. He transitioned from junior counsel to senior counsel
and vice president. He became president of Idaho Power in 1974, CEO in 1976 and retired in 1985.
Idaho Power prospered during his years in leadership and he often attributed the success of the
company to the dedicated employees of the company.
While Idaho Power was a company that he truly loved, it was by no means his only passion. For many
years, Jim served on the boards of a number of companies and non -profits.
He was a board member of Albertson's, First Security Bank and Blue Cross of Idaho Additionally, he
felt very deeply for the welfare of the Boise community and provided considerable time and talent to
these causes.
Included in these organizations are the YMCA, the Parks Department, the Boise Zoo Board, St.
Alphonsus Board and Foundation, Bishop Kelly High School Board and Foundation, St. Joseph's grade
school, St. John's Cathedral, the Idaho Catholic Diocese, and The College of Idaho Board
Additionally, he served on the board of the Ada County Highway District and was the chairman of the
Idaho Lottery Commission. He was also a proud member of the And Club in Boise for almost 50 years.
Needless to say, he was rarely bored.
While dedicated to his Boise community, he was even more dedicated to his family. He attended
countless sporting events that his four boys participated in for literally 40 years. He would often attend
ciiy league basketball games that involved his sons. He may qualify as the only spectator at a city
league game to get thrown out of the gym because, in his words, the referee was a pinhead!
He supported every endeavor his sons were involved in and then did the same with his grandchildren
and great grandchildren to the best of his ability.
His greatest dedication and love was to his wife, Lois. Towards the end of her life, Lois was afflicted
with Alzheimer's disease and had to be moved to a care facility in 1997.
She remained there until 2005 when she passed away. It was a rare day in ilia( time period when Jim
did not visit her twice a day He was a very dedicated father and husband.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents James and Bessie, a sister Curdilla, an infant son, his
grandson Jimmy and of course the love of his life, Lois.

Jim leaves behind his four sons: Jim Bruce (Micki) and their children Heather Brown (Cazzie) and
Dave Bruce; Steve Bruce (Beri) and their children Daniel Bruce (Kristen) and Bethany Bewley (James);
Bob Bruce (Gloria) and their children Sara Bruce and Joe Bruce; Dave Bruce (Terri) and their children
Nicole Freckleton (Ethan) and Andrew Bruce. Jim also leaves behind 10 great-grandchildren, with
another one due any day.
He also leaves behind a lasting legacy of which his family can be very proud. He was truly a "one of a
kind" individual who helped to make Boise a better place and he will be missed greatly, but certainly not
forgotten by all of those who knew and loved him.
The family wants to give a special thanks to Wendy from Align Hospice who was wonderful in his final
days. To Lee, who came in as a helper for Jim over the past couple of years and quickly became his
friend. She took wonderful care of him and quickly leamed how to banter with him.
To the staff at Ivy Place who not only took care of Mom for seven years but also took wonderful care of
Dad in his last months. They are truly saints!
Finally, to Terese Sackos of Ivy Place, who was such a great friend and caregiver to Jim for so many
years. It meant so much to not only him but also to the family.
A scholarship fund is established at Bishop Kelly High School in the names of James and Lois Bruce,
through the Bishop Kelly Foundation, 7009 Franklin Road, Boise, ID 83709.

Gloria Elena Burgess
Gloria Elena Burgess was
born Dec. 13, 1934, in Los
Angeles to Evangeline and
Andrew Lopez. She grew up
in Trona, California.
As the eldest girl of nine
children, much of the caring
for siblings was her respon-
sibility. She left home at the
age of 18.
Gloria
raised
three chil-
dren all on
her own
in the San
Fernando
Valley of
California.
She relo-
cated to
Prospect,
Ore., in 1973. Her whole life
revolved around her chil-
dren - all she ever wanted
was to be a mother and friend
to to them.
Later, she would be a
grandmother to eight grand-
children. Her grandchildren
will tell you that she was the
best grandmother ever. She
had a special way of making
each one feel like they were
her favorite. Gloria loved
to garden and would plant
enough vegetables to share
with all her neighbors and
friends.
Being very creative, her
hobbies were drawing, paint-
ing, sewing, and crocheting.
In her later years, she would
crochet baby blankets for
the newborn babies in her
church. She enjoyed giv-
ing the blankets to the new
mothers anonymously, but
everyone knew that it was
Gloria that was making the
blankets.
Gloria married Benjamin
Burgess in 1985. It was Ben
that cared for Gloria during
the last 14 years of her life
while she endured cancer,
and later kidney failure.
Her faith in her Lord never
wavered and if you asked her
how she was, she would al-
ways answer, "I'm Blessed".
Gloria Elena Burgess
went home to be with her
Lord on Nov 29, 2013. She
leaves behind many friends
whose lives will be forever
changed, as was evident
at her memorial at the

McCall on Dec. 14. She also
leaves behind her husband,
Ben, of New Meadows; her
daughters Laura Perkins

Janet Burnett
Janet Bumett passed peacefully with her family at her side on Sept. 13, 2013.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013 at 2:30 p.m. at Heikkila Funeral
Chapel in McCall.
Janet was born Nov. 7, 1962 to Lewis and Marge Gheen in Stanton, Calif.
Janet is a kind and loving soul that worried more about her family then what was happening
to her. She loved her grandkids so much. She would buy a toy or ouffit for them just so she
could see the joy on their face.
When I think of Janet I think Disneyland. We went several times, and she was like a little kid, just as
happy as could be waiting for the gate to open, we had to be the first ones there and the last to leave.
Watching Disney movies like a little kid, she bought them all to watch with grandkids and our kids when
they were young.
Janet's dream came true when she got live in the mountains in our cabin. She fed the fox and birds.
She enjoyed life, watching the critters, driving her route. She always seemed to have an adventure.
Janet was a hippie at heart. She always had a smile on her face, peace and love to all. Janet always
wanted to feed everyone, she loved to cook and her food was the best.
She loved her family and friends with all of her heart
You're still with us, love us!
She will be missed by family and friends, there are too many to even try to mention.
Janet is survived by her loving husband David Burnett, sons Cody and Nathan Burnett, mother Marge,
sister Lora, brothers Randy, Johnny, Danny, Bruce, and grandchildren Carson and Harper
Janet is preceded in death by her father, Lewis Gheen

Honey, so many people are missing you. Everyone tells me what a great guy you were. I already knew
that.
Our 50 years together — starting in grammar school— could read like a fiction love story. Through our
many adventures as teens, you on a destroyer in Vietnam, our move from east to west coast, starting
many businesses, and forming great friendships along the way, we were able to remain our own person,
while supporting and respecting each other.
Our "together" time in Idaho was always special. Even though you "didn't like the cold" you treasured
the "locals" and were awed by the beauty of this area.
I know your spirit is here with us — as the paver says, "Always Love You." Everlasting peace be with
you.

LET GO AND LET GOD
As children bring their broken toys
With tears for us to mend
I brought my broken dreams to God
Because He is my friend.
But then, instead of leaving him in peace
To work alone.
I hung around and tried to help
Wth ways that were my own.
A last 1 snatched them back and cried,
°How can you be so slow?"
'My child," He said, `What could I do?
You never did let go."
