Members present: Brian Ladley, Christine Glasheen, Denise Rego, Jean Sears,
Robert Steinmann, Maureen Steinmann
Minutes for the June 18, 2010 meeting were accepted.
Committee Business Reviewed:
• Update on Blacksmith Shop at Drummer Boy. Building Inspector, Victor Staley notified the
Brewster Historical Society that they are not to have any more public events until the ramp
to the blacksmith shop is rebuilt and inspected.
• The committee approved a letter to the selectmen and town manager stating that it is not safe
nor healthy for unleashed dogs to be allowed at Drummer Boy Park. The committee also
reiterated that Drummer Boy Park should be made accessible to all. As it is now, the park is
considered inaccessible.
• CORD's meeting Sept. 30th re accessible recreation. The Chair suggested promoting the use
of buses with wheelchair lifts on the seniors trips arranged by the Councils on Aging so that
these trips would be accessible to all. The Chair also forwarded another question re what
does a person who uses an electric wheelchair do in the event they have car trouble and have
to be towed, especially at night. This question arose from a. recent personal experience.
• Jeff Dougan from the MA Office on Disability will be at oua~ November 19th meeting. Possible
subject matters will be discussed at our next meeting.
• Brian asked if anything had been done about making the Visitors Center at Nickerson State
Park accessible. The Chair said she had not yet spoken with Superintendent Peterson, but
would follow up on it.
• Denise and Brian completed their restaurants review. Letters will be sent to those
restaurants noted to be fully accessible: Agro Dolce, Ardeo's, Bayside Seafood and Market,
Dunkin Donuts, Galley Grill at Captains Golf Course, JT's Seafood and Northside
Restaurant. El Guapo's Taqueria is fully accessible but just needs a designated handicap
space. The Chair will write a separate note to them. Nothing else will be done re the
restaurants until next spring. The committee hopes to have a list of accessible restaurants
available at the Brewster Visitors Center for next summer.
• Denise gave the Chair the list of beach wheelchairs users for this past summer.
• The Chair joined by Brian Ladley will meet soon with Tom Thatcher to see what can be done
to make Town Hall ADA compliant. The main problem is the counters in the various
departments -they are too high and are not accessible to users of wheelchairs. Brian will also
check into what the Selectmen's Meeting Room needs to assist those with impaired hearing.
The Chair passed out info sheets on "hearing loops".
• Grist Mill. The Chair reported that Dana Condit of the MiIE Sites Committee would like to
join forces to apply for CPC funds to extend the present ac•~essible brick walkway and
possibly have a sign done in braille. He will be in touch.
• Christine will check into platform/walkway materials for our accessible beach projects. The
Steinmanns saw a new type of accessible walkway in Eastham, manufactured by Super Deck
Systems www.superdecksystems com. Christine is checking into other material options.
• Meeting times will remain the same as before: 2pm at COA on 3rd Friday of the month.
• Meeting ended at 3pm. Next Meeting October 15th at 2pm at the COA.
