Mushroom expert warms about making wrong choices for dinner
BY CHRISTIE GROB
for The Star -News
Michael Beug remembers the night he received a call about a couple on an island in British Columbia.
The couple had cooked a meal with a mushroom they had
picked, but it was only after dinner they identified it as
possibly a toxic species
An examination by Beug of photos sent by the couple
found the mushrooms were safe, but the story is a good
lesson for all mushroom hunters, Beug told an audience in
McCall on Saturday.
Beug, a mycologist from Washington, spoke at gathering
of mushroom enthusiasts held at Quaker Hill Camp in
McCall.
His main objective was not to dampen the excitement of
mushroom hobbyists, but to educate them so their post -hunt
culinary events are enjoyed and not merely survived.
Many local edible mushrooms have nearly identical "evil"
twins, Beug said.
The widely sought morel has a twin that many mistake for
the real thing, he said. The early stage of another toxic
mushroom resembles the common puff ball, but with deadly
consequences if consumed.
The result of misidentification of mushrooms in the field
often results in prolonged or permanent kidney or liver
damage, he said. Death can even results depending on the toxin and amount digested.
Unwanted Effects
Mycologist Michael Beug shoes a o s•.sample of local
fungi during his remarks last Saturday in McCall.
Some toxic mushrooms cause unwanted hallucinations as well as illness. Beug recalled a case where
a man consumed mushrooms that Beug referred to as the "Alice in Wonderland" mushroom.
The man was in his car, but thought someone was trying to throw him off a cliff. He awoke the next
moming to find his car torn apart, including a broken steering wheel.
There is even ambiguity among experts in his field of study, Beug said. When speaking about one
species of mushroom, he admitted some of his colleagues felt they were edible, but he would not eat
them.
This leaves the hobbyist with the decision to stick primarily to the species of mushrooms whose safety
is unanimously agreed upon or take a chance on those under debate, he said.
Either way, Beug offers this handy piece of advice: "Identify it before dinner, not after."
