RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF NEW JERSEY STATE LEAGUE
OF MUNICIPALITIES ANNUAL CONFERENCE
WHEREAS, on May 12, 1996, CBS on the" "
60 MINUTES program portrayed the
League of Municipalities Conference as an opportunity to corrupt rather than the
occasion to teach and inform local officials through the technical sessions held at the
Conference; and
WHE~REAS, CBS has demeaned both the League of Municipalities and thousands
of local officials who work tirelessly on behalf of their constituents; and
WHEREAS, CBS failed to present a balanced report by:
1. Not interviewing a responsible elected official as to the value of the
League Conference.
2. Failing to disclose that this is the opportunity for local officials to
learn about new products, methods and systems by experts which
will reduce costs and improve government efficiency;
3. Failing to disclose that New Jersey has strict bidding laws which
are monitored by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs.
4. Failing to disclose that the Conference is attended by numerous State
officials who have the opportunity to meet with local officials to
discuss mutual problems;
5. Failing to discuss the many seminars and educational programs which
are conducted to educate local officials on recent legal changes,
opportunities for saving tax dollars while preparing for the challenges
of the future.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Mayor and Council of the
Borough of Carteret, County of Middlesex, State of New Jersey, request CBS to
publicly recognize and give credit to the many local officials whose primary interest
~s to serve their constituents and to the League of Municipalities which acts on behalf
of all citizens of New Jersey; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the
Governor requesting she issue a statement criticizing the CBS program and
supporting the League of Municipalities and all local officials in their efforts, the New
Jersey State League of Municipalities, and to each member of the New Jersey
Legislature representing the Borough of Carteret.
