Sallye Sanders first joined the McCall Hiking Club four years ago after her husband died from a brain
tumor.
"I didn't have anyone to hike with anymore and I found the
club gives everyone a way to hike trails that most probably

wouldn't feel comfortable to do by themselves," said

Harry Henzy, 86, of Donnelly
"We have generally two types of hikes each time — the short one and the advertised longer hike and so
folks can make their choice," Henzy said.
He has been with the club about four years and winters in Tucson, Ariz., where he hiked about 300
miles last year.
"You have some that want to do longer hikes with more elevation gain and you have people who have
been with the hiking club since it started and as the years go by don't want to do the harder hikes
anymore," Sanders said.
The hikes offer something for everyone, said club member Ron Hills, 65 of McCall, who has been with
the club for about seven years said. "We have folks who are 80 plus years old to those in there 20s,"
Hills said.
"It's the exercise, getting out and the camaraderie," he said. "Everyone chit-chats and its this way all
the time."
A few faster hikers will go on ahead once the group starts out but for the most part the club members
try to stay together, Hills said.
Group leaders have two -way radios, a experienced hiker is selected to lead the hike and another
leader is the "sweep," or the last person up the trail.
Although the club advertises its regularly scheduled Wednesdays and Saturdays they also offer a
variety of other activities such as kayak outings, bike trips around the lake, and a boat social to North
Beach.
In the winter, members can take part in snowshoe and cross- country get- togethers/
"We get a lot of people who read about it in the newspaper and then show up to come hike," said
Becky Deibert, 62, who has been a member since 2008 after moving from Boise with her husband.
"We had been coming to McCall for years, but as soon as we moved here and joined the hiking club
we gained this huge social network and it really helped us decide we wanted to move up here full time,
Deibert said.
