Dye takes
judo crown
By Randall Brooks
The Star -News
The red carpet was out for Mc-
Call's Ryan Dye at the U.S.
Olympic Training Center in Col-
orado Springs, Colo., last week.
The 12-year-old member of the
McCall Judo Club was given the
formal honors as he accepted a
gold medal for winning his age
and weight class at the U.S.
Junior Olympic Judo Champion-
ships.
The two-day event was held
last week at the Olympic training
center in Colorado Springs.
Dye, son of Kelly and Joan
Dye of McCall, was undefeated
in his matches among 10-12-year-
olds weighing 85-95 pounds.
"Nobody even gave him a
tough time," said Mary Moore,
one of a group of parents who ac-
companied the seven McCall
competitors who made the trip.
"He beat everybody but the last
guy in the first minute of the
match."
While Dye's performance was
the highlight for Coach John
Pyle's traveling judo squad,
others also faired well among the
430 young judokas from
throughout the country who had
come to compete in the shadow
of the U.S. Olympic Judo Team.
Jim Kelly, 17, captured fourth
place in a hotly contested brown -
black belt class at 172 pounds,
losing a close match for third
place to a 20-year-old competitor
from the U.S. Navy.
Others who finished with
medals included 12-year-old
Todd Allen, who won fourth
place at 120-132 pounds, and Joel
Strickler, an 11-year-old com-
petitor who captured fifth place
in his division.
Dino Pyle, 11, won two of four
matches at the competition, while
brother Kenny, 13, was caught in
a tough age group and was
eliminated in two matches.
Keir Strickler, 14, was another
whose birthdate caused him pro-
blems as he was pitted against
competitors almost three years
older than himself. Strickler won
his first match, but lost his next
two, Moore said.
Moore said that because the
age groups are determined by a
Dec. 31 deadline each year,
several of the McCall competitors
drew much older competition
than they are used to because of
their birthdates.
"It was a great experience for
the kids," Moore said. "We got
to see a lot of Olympic people in
all types of sports. They got to
see some of the famous names."
Next Wednesday, the McCall
Judo Club plans to send out
another 10 traveling ambassadors
to the U.S. Judo Association
Junior Championships in Las
Vegas, Nev.
The competition will be held
July 5-6 at Caesar's Palace.

Judoka Dye
takes 3rd place
By Randall Brooks
The Star -News
McCall's 10-member con-
tingent at the U.S. Judo Associa-
tion Junior National Champion-
ships in Las Vegas last week came
home tired, starry-eyed, and
holding one medal, a third -place
win by 12-year-old Ryan Dye.
McCall Judo Club coach John
Pyle was satisfied that his youths
had done their best among the
800 compeititors from
throughout the country and
Canada.
"This was the first shot at na-
tional competition for a lot of
these kids," Pyle said. "The kids
all fought hard and did a pretty
good job. The competition was --
whew -- oh so tough.
"Just about all of them won
matches," Pyle said. "And that
was pretty tough to do."
In addition, the kids had seen
the infamous Circus Circus and
had tasted some of the best video
game action in the world. To cool
off in the 121-degree heat, Pyle
said most of the kids joined the
throng of judo competitors at the
local water slides.
Dye, an age -group winner at
the Junior Olympics last month
at Colorado Springs, Colo.,
lasted all they way through his
division before losing twice to the
same competitior from Hawaii, a
state Pyle said consistently puts
out top performers.
Dye's final match was a
scoreless duel of wits, decided on
a decision by the judges.
At stake in the older age
groups was a position on the US-
JA International team,
something Dye could be com-
peting for next year.
"A little more work and 1
think Ryan can do it," Pyle said.
Besides Dye, members of the
McCall Judo Club at the com-
petition included Jerry Mc-
Cauley, 6; Dan Lukecart, 10;
Ryan Sanford, 10; LeRoy
Mathews, 11; Joel Strickler, 12;
Keir Strickler, 14; Kenny Pyle,
13; David Jacobsen, 13, and
Todd Allen, 13.
They were accompanied at the
competition by a group of
parents from the judo club.
"There's a couple of our
younger kids that should be in
there pretty soon," Pyle said.
Pietri takes gold medal at Olympics
BY RANDALL BROOKS
The Star -News
Cheyenne Pietri
McCall's Cheyenne Pietri
wears his gold medal earned in
judo at the U.S. Junior Olympics
proudly -- that is, when he can get
it back from family and friends.
More than once during the
course of an interview, he had to
borrow it back from the neck of a
friend in order to show it off
himself.
His mother, Judy, answered
most of the interview questions
for him. An aunt, Edna Lunt,
elaborated when necessary.
Joey Pietri, Cheyenne's father,
had made the trip to Colorado
Springs, Colo., on May 30-31
with the team and saw the whole
thing happen. He stopped a
reporter on the street in McCall
to make sure he had heard the
news.
Small towns are like that,
especially when they produce
champions.
The McCall -Donnelly fourth
grader is the product of a family
and community that is every bit
as proud of the medal and what it
means as the young judoka
himself.
Pietri's outstanding perfor-
mance as a representative of the
McCall Judo Club in winning the
7-9 year -old class for judokas of
75 pounds -and -over is a point of
pride with other club members.
Like most teams, the members
seem to share in the ac-
complishments.
Someone from the McCall club
had brought home the gold, so
the bumps and bruises from
tough battles others had been
through were a bit easier.
McCa11's Joel Strickler had
made it all the way to the
semifinals to take fourth place in
his weight class before losing for
his second time to the same wiley
competitor.
Teammates Ryan Dye, Kenny
and Dino Pyle had all competed
hard before bowing out of com-
petition. David Jacobsen came
up with a case of the flu and had
to leave competition.
But there were somewhere bet-
ween 600 and 700 competitors at
the meet. As club coach John
Pyle is always quick to point out,
"The competition over there is
tough -- it's real tough."
It took Pietri just four matches
to go undefeated through his
16-member age and weight
classification to win the title. He
beat the nation's best.
The shy Pietri said
ceremoniously that he owed it all
to family and friends and his
coaches, Pyle and Woody Bean.
Pyle said a highlight at the
Olympic Training. Center site was
when olympic bronze medalist Ed
Liddy took Cheyenne and his
younger brother Sequoia up to
his room at the training center
and showed them his medal.
Cheyenne confirmed the fact,
saying that holding an actual
olympic bronze medal had been
the most memorable moment of
the trip for him.
"He'd never won a medal, it's
always been trophies," Pyle said.
"I think he came out of there
wanting one."
Pyle said attitude has a lot to
do with success in tournament
competition when the pressure is
on. "After his first one, I figured
he was going to get something out
of this."
"Cheyenne's a slow starter,"
he said. "He got by the first one
and then just started to roll. He
was having a good time out there.
That's what you have to do."
Pietri has been competing with
the club for four years, and, as
his mother said, "He hasn't ever
come home without a trophy."
For three years, he said he has
been the age group champion at
both top Idaho state competi-
tions at Twin Falls and McCall.
Besides bronze medalist Ed
Liddy, there were a number of
other good influences at the tour-
nament for the select group
representing McCall's 90-plus
member club, including McCall's
Jim Bacon.
The 21-year old Bacon was
selected earlier this year to train
at the Olympic Training Center
and the McCall youngsters had
the opportunity to stay in his
room.
Bacon got a bit of good news
himself while the McCall kids
were there. After a second -place
showing the the U.S. Senior Na-
tionals, he has been chosen to
represent the U.S. judo team in
international competition in
Austria this summer.
Also, Bacon has been picked
for the World University Games
in Brazil in December.
For Pyle, it means watching
one champion reach the top,
while another begins a career.
Hailey Duke displays the form that earned her a black belt.
McCall Taekwondo students
move to higher level of skill
Nineteen students in the McCa11
Taekwondo Club have been promoted
to Advanced White Belt. This is the
first promotion conducted by the
McCall club since it was formed ear-
lier this year.
Students promoted were Roxanne
Ibarra, Cody Hanawalt, Sam Whipple,
Charlie Whipple, Reese Hudson,
David Thiede, Marty Thiede, Mike
Lenzi, Krystin Lenzi, Jackson
Kellogg, Chris Cronk, Charlie Smith,

Ibarra, Dan Cronk, Stacey Vorhees,
Scott Mackenzi and Mike Heady.
Also, club member Hailey Duke
was promoted to First Degree Junior
Black Belt for eight -year -olds as the
result of attending the Korean Martial
Arts Camp held in Ketchum in Au-
gust.
A total of 120 martial artists from
all over Idaho and the West trained
under six of the world's greatest Ko-
rean martial artists.
Duke is the daughter of Larry and
Jane Duke of McCall. Larry Duke is
the founder of the McCall club who
also founded taekwondo clubs in
Ketchum and Pocatello.

Jim Bacon falls short
for Olympic judo team
BY ROGER PHILLIPS
The Star -News
For the second time in his career,
former McCall resident Jim Bacon
narrowly missed a spot on the U.S.
Olympic Judo Team at the recent
Olympic Trials tournament in Colo-
rado Springs, Colo. But Bacon is
not giving up on his Olympic
dreams.
Bacon, 32, finished second at
the trials, losing the team's one spot
for the heavyweight division to long-
time rival Damon Keeve of San
Francisco, Calif.
"It's definitely upsetting, but it's
not the end of the world," Bacon
said from his training camp in Colo-
rado Springs, Colo.
Bacon's long judo career has
been hampered by untimely inju-
ries that have three times affected
his chances of making the Olympic
squad. The U.S. team takes seven
men and seven women to the Olym-
pics, one for each weight class.
Bacon could still go if Keeve is
unable to compete.
Bacon was the top -ranked heavy-
weight in 1994, but he suffered a
torn pectoral muscle in November
of that year. That injury required
nearly a year to heal, and during that
time Bacon lost his ranking. He
then had to travel to Europe and
compete in tournaments to qualify
for the U.S. trials.
Bacon finished in the top three in
tournaments in Denmark, Finland
and Sweden, which made him the
fifth -ranked heavyweight in the U.S.
But that meant he had to fight com-
petitors above and below him in the
rankings at the Olympic trials to
earn the chance to fight Keeve, who
was the top seed.
Bacon fought a total of four
matches at the trials, including two
matches the same day he fought
Keeve, who hadn't fought all day.
Bacon lost in a split decision.
Keeve defeated Bacon in the
1992 trials after Bacon again suf-
fered an injury prior to the trials that
left him only two months to prepare
for the tournament. Injuries also

hampered him prior to the 1988
trials.
"I was pretty lucky to even be
in the Olympic trials this time
around," Bacon said. "I got in and
did my best. At least I still had a
chance at it."
After the 1996 Olympics in
Atlanta, Keeve, who is 36, will
retire and Bacon may have an-
other shot at the Olympics. Bacon
said it is not uncommon for heavy-
weights to compete past age 35.
"Physically, I'm still good, so
I've got a few years," Bacon said.
"I'm going to keep doing this until
it's not fun to do it anymore."
Bacon said he will remain at
the Olympic Training Center in
Colorado Springs for a couple of
months to help the team prepare
for the Olympics. Then he will
turn his attention to national cham-
pionships in April, an event he
won in 1993 and 1994.
Bacon has also represented the
U.S. at several international com-
petitions, including two world judo
championships, the Pan Ameri-
can Games and the Goodwill
Games.
"He's been on every U.S. team
except the Olympic team," said
John Pyle of Donnelly, who
coached Bacon for years while
Bacon was a member of Pyle's
Judo school.
Bacon is the son of James Ba-
con of McCall and Patricia Ander-
son of Pocatello. He began his
judo career at age eight in the
McCall Judo Club, a judo school
that Pyle ran for 25 years.

the U.S. Olympic Training Center, which is
also located at Colorado Springs.
Castillo is shooting for the 2000 Olympics
and also for the U.S. Junior World Team that
will compete in Portugal in October. To achieve
that, Castillo needs to accrue 15 points in
national competitions. He got 5 points for the
win Saturday. He has also been named All -

Pair wins bronze at Australian judo competitiom
14-year-old set sights on 2016 Olympics
BY TOM GROTE
The Star -News
Amber Pair of Cascade won a bronze medal in judo on Saturday at the Australian Youth Olympic
Festival in Sydney, Australia.
Pair, 14, a member of the McCall Judo Club, was among only five girls and five
boys selected by the U.S. Olympic Committee to represent the United States.
She is a ninth grader at Cascade High School.
Pair defeated Jinnan Wang of China to win one of two bronze medals awarded
in the women's 106-pound class.
She started out the day by defeating Meng Liang of China in her quarter -final
match, only to be defeated in the semi-finals by Gabriela Clemente of Brazil.
The Olympic Festival is a multi -sport event featuring 19 sports, including judo,
to develop youths for potential competition in Olympic events
Brazil dominated the judo event as the competitors from that country claimed
five of the 10 gold medals.
Australia also performed well on home soil, compiling a total of 15 medals. The United State, Chinese
Taipei and China all won gold medal at the event, which was held in the same venue as the 2000
Summer Olympics.
In an interview on Tuesday, Pair said she was able to scout her opponents by watching their previous
matches on the Intemet. Even then, she was surprised by their quickness.
"I just stayed focused and kept my head in the game," she said.
Pair kept thinking of the training she received from her coach, Kenny Pyle, which was to try to
dominate early. "First grip, first attack," she quoted Pyle's advice.
Pair traveled to Australia with her parents, Bob and Cindy Pair, but most of her week was spent in the
athletes village training with her teammates.
Read For Rio
The intemational atmosphere at the Sydney games made Pair more determined to compete for the
United States in judo at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
"It took a lot of hard work, with my parents and coaches pushing me, to reach my goals so far," Pair
said. "So hopefully if I keep training as I have so far, I can keep going."
Pyle said Pair's future is bright.
"She goes percent all the time and she is determined and driven," he said.
If Pair is selected for the 2016 Olympic team, she will have gone further than any previous member of
the McCall Judo Club, which was founded in 1970, Pyle said.
The club has four members who potentially could be part of the U.S. team attending the world judo
championships in Slovenia this fall, he said.
"Our club has gone to another level," he said.
The accomplishment is even more remarkable given the fad the club trains in the former Lake Fork
Grange Hall, which has no running water, he said.

McCall Judo Club founder Pyle dies at age 72
Club started 40 years ago continues teaching life skills
"The way he motivated wasn't with yelling and intensity, it was with love and with absolute
caring." —Kenny Pyle
BY TOM GROTE
The Star,News
John Pyle, who taught judo as well as lessons of Irfe to thousands of youths for 40 years, died last
Thursday at his McCall home.
Joni Pyle
Pyle, 72, died of lung cancer, which was diagnosed last fall, said his wife, Barb Pyle.
He started the McCall Judo Club in 1974 and the club has continued to operate nearly
every year since then. The club currently has 70 members.
The club has produced world -class judokas, but Pyle's legacy was developing the
character of the youths he taught, Barb Pyle said.
"Judo coincides with life itself, with discipline and respect and dealing with your trials, and I think
Johnny liked passing that message on," she said.
Her husband had a particular skill at helping people deal with their faults, Barb Pyle said.
"He would talk to people about their shortcoming to the point that pretty soon they were laughing about
it," she said. "He figured that if we could look at ourselves end know we are not perfect, then we can go
along with that.'
Youths who were taught by Pyle continued to stay in touch with him even as they grew into their 40s
and 50s, said Kenny Pyle, John's son and current head coach of the McCall Judo Club.
"He had a certain way of touching those kids," said Pyle, 42. "The way he motivated wasn't with yelling
and intensity, it was with love and with absolute oaring."
In 1989, Pyle bought the former Lake Fork Grange Hell and donated it to the judo dub as its "dojo" or
training hall.
The club has never charged dues for its lessons other than membership in USA Judo. Pyle spent
thousands of dollars out of his own pocket to help his students travel to tournaments and for basic needs
such as meals, his son said.
"When most people would have kept driving, John Pyle was the man that stopped and gave that kid a
ride," said Cheynne Pietri, another former student.
Pyle saw the potential in youths, Pietri said. "His faith and belief in the individual saved so many kids in
this community by giving them a belief in themselves" he said.
Pyle influenced adults as well as youths, said Jeff Baker, a long-time volunteer and parent of two club
members.
"He made me went to be a better person," said Baker, who said Pyle also was adept in marriage
counseling and preached good grooming. "He was as much as a life coach as anything."
Pyle's life was devastated in 1994 when another of his sons, Dino, was killed in an auto accident,
Kenny Pyle said. He shut down the club after Dino's death, but Kenny reopened it after returning to
McCall in 1997.
John Pyle returned to judo after Kenny reopened the club, helping with coaching and making sure the
mats were cleaned and the dojo was warmed up for practices, Baker said. "John was our statesman," he
said.
Special tribute was paid to Pyle last Saturday during the High Mountain Open, the McCall Judo Club's
annual toumament that attracted about 1,000 judokas, coaches and their family to Payette Lakes Middle
School.
A memorial service for Pyle is planned for Saturday afternoon, but Kenny Pyle said he also has a
commitment that morning - a joint workout with judokas from around the region that was planned months
ago.
"I thought about cancelling it but I talked to mom and we agreed it should go on," Pyle said. "So we are
going to work out in the moming and go the service in the afternoon."
