'McCall runners bound for Beanto-w-n
BY ROGER PHILLIPS
The Star -News
A message on a sign in front of a
local lumber yard recently asked the
rhetorical question, "If jogging is so
fun, how come you never see runners
smiling ?" Whoever put up that sign
probably never saw Nancy Hatfield
and Jenni Blake run.
The McCall duo of long distance
runners have a lot to smile about.
Next month, they will race in the
100th Boston Marathon.
Both women qualified for the Bos-
ton Marathon, to be held April 15, in
separate races last year. Hatfield
posted a time of 3:14 at her sixth
marathon in St. George, Utah, and
Blake finished in 3:30 at a race in
Pueblo, Colo., which was her third
marathon.
Boston hosts one of the most pres-
tigious marathons in the world, and
running in the centennial will be a
special achievement for the McCall
women.
"It's a once -in -a- lifetime chance
to run in the 100th," Hatfield said.
"We feel so fortunate to be able to do
it. It's a privilege, a celebration of
being there."
As if running 26 consecutive miles
isn't epic enough, the shear magni-
tude of the race will make the Super
Bowl seem like a company picnic. An
estimated 40,000 runners are expected
to compete, and a million- strong
crowd of spectators will line the streets
of Boston.
What will that feel like to two gals
from McCall?
"I can't even imagine," Blake said.
The 26 -mile race will start at noon,
but the two will board buses at be-
tween 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. for a ride
to the start. The runners will be stacked
so deep that each will have a com-
puter chip laced into her shoe that will
record the time she crosses the start-
ing line. That way, their times will
accurately reflect the actual time they
start the race.
But even with that feature, neither
is expecting to run her personal best.
Hatfield said the runners will be
packed so tightly it will take miles to
string them out so they run at their
own paces.
"It's a mass sea of runners,"
Hatfield said.
The road to Boston hasn't been a
warm, sunny trip for either. The two
Tito ttie (utdcors
have trained together all winter long
in the worst weather McCall can dish
out. They've run in sub -zero tempera-
tures that left their eyelashes frozen
and their hair gray from frost. They've
also run on ice, snow, slush, and ev-
erything in between, but despite the
hardships of training in the moun-
tains, the two don't complain.
"It's never a chore, but some days
feel better than others," Hatfield said.
They recently attended a party in
Boise for other runners preparing for
the Boston Marathon, and one Boise
resident complained about winter
training there, which won no sympa-
thy from the McCall pair.
"Oh, we don't want to hear about
it," Hatfield jokingly told the runner.
Blake and Hatfield run twice a
week, logging eight to 10 miles on
Wednesdays, then increasing their
mileage on weekends, incrementally
adding miles each week until they
peak with a 20 -mile run prior to the
race.
And that's about as regimented as
their training schedule goes. Both es-
chew rigid training cycles, and nei-
ther has a coach or trainer.
"We both initially had different
schedules and didn't follow either,"
Hatfield said. "We both just love run-
ning and don't want to adhere to any-
thing."
They may not have coaches, but
both enjoy full support from family,
friends, employers and the commu-
nity.
"Our families and husbands have
been great," Hatfield said. "It's been
a big commitment for them.
While training, they are frequently
greeted with honks and waves from
passing motorists, and the word, has
gotten out that they are training for the
big race.
"People are already saying, `Good
luck in Boston,' " Blake said.
It is also fitting the two women
will run in 100th race in Boston be-
cause both come from families of
Nancy Hatfield and Jenni Blake prepare for the Boston Marathon.
runners. Blake's grandfather ran for
the Boston Athletic Association,
which organizes the race, and her
uncle ran in a previous Boston Mara-
thon.
Hatfield's father, Tom Hunter, is
also a former marathoner. She and her
husband, Travis, will meet up with
Travis' son, David Hatfield, in Bos-
ton. David qualified for the race in
San Diego, Calif., where he lives.
Blake and Hatfield ran a marathon
together in 1994 at Avenue of the
Giants, a race through the redwood .
forests in Northern California. They
are already making plans to run the
Maui Marathon next year.
"We want to do an annual mara-
thon because it's a great way to see a
city and center a vacation around,"
Hatfield said.
Through their running, the two
have formed a friendship that will
likely last long after the Boston Mara-
thon has melded into a fond memory
with other races the two have shared.
They will probably reflect back on
their experience while running to-
gether down a quiet road in prepara-
tion for a future race,
"We love it. We're going to run
forever," Hatfield said.
McCall women finish marathon
Two McCall runners recently re-
turned to McCall after running in
the 100th Boston Marathon on held
April 15.
Nancy Hatfield, 39, finished with
a time of 3 hours, 25 minutes.
Hatfield placed 405th in the
women's open division (ages 18-
39) and 519 overall for women in a
field of 8,479 female runners who
finished the race.
Jenni Blake, 30, finished in 3
hours, 50 minutes. Blake placed
2,006th in the women's open divi-
sion and 2,697th out of all the fe-
male runners.
Approximately 38,000 runners
competed in the 26 -mile marathon.

258 compete at Junior Olympic
The Red Ridge Run brought 258
ski racers from six Western states to
Ponderosa State Park in McCall last
weekend for a Junior Olympics quali-
fier and citizens race.
The race was a preview of the
Junior Olympics Cross Country
Championships, which will be held at
the park in March.
Numerous McCall racers picked
up wins in their classes against a field
of 258 racers on Saturday and 200 on
Sunday.
Several McCall Nordic Ski Team
racers were struck by illness earlier in
the week and hadn't fully recovered,
which hurt some performances, Coach
Gregg Lawley said.
McCall racer Eric Taplin again
placed fifth in his class to in the skate
race to get one step closer to qualify-
ing for the championships.
Several others racers still have the
chance to qualify for the champion-
ship race.
They will race a final qualifier in
Jackson, Wyo. next month, which will
determine who can race in the Junior
Olympic championships.
Lawley also noted the race went
well and there appears to be no prob-
lems with the course or location at the
park for the championships. He com-
mended local volunteers.

Boisean wins first ultra running race in McCall mountains
Joelle Vaught of Boise covered 40 miles of mountain trails east of McCall in just over eight hours to
win the first McCall Trail Running Classic on Saturday.
Vaught and the other competitors faced courses of 10, 20 or 40 miles, with the
longest course seeing 9,500 feet of ascent and 9,500 feet of decent.
The 161 racers had 13-1/2 hours to finish the course, which started at Jug
Mountain Ranch and passed such landmarks as Louie Lake and Boulder Lake.
Runners came from Canada, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana, Nevada,
New York, Utah, Colorado and Oklahoma.
The race started cool and overcast but warmed into the low 80s, race organizer
Jeremy Humphrey of McCall said.
"We were worried about high stream crossings, but the melting peaked and the
streams shrunk just in time," Humphrey said.
Ultra runners face many more obstacles than road racers, including extreme
weather, attitude, Finding their way and encountering wild animals, he said.
"As the run goes beyond the marathon distance, runners will deplete all of their
stored muscle sugar reserves and be left with nothing but guts to get them
through," Humphrey said.

Vaught, 37, began competing in ultra events 10 years ago and won the 100 kilometer national
championships held in Oregon in 2010.
She is also a multiple winner of the Way Too Cool 50km race in California, and this year she won the
Lake Sonoma 50 mile race, also in California.
"Trail running lets me be out in nature, often on beautiful trails, doing something I love - running!" said
Vaught, who works as a neurodiagnostic technologist. "It is fun to challenge your body and see how far
and hard you can push it."
She trains by running in the Boise foothills with her friends and dogs, often going out at 5 a.m. with a
headlamp.
The biggest challenge of ultra races is consuming enough calories to sustain her to the finish line,
Vaught said.
"The next worst thing is falling, which I tend to do often, but luckily I stayed mostly upright in this race!,"
she said.
The next local ultra event will be the first Idaho Mountain Trail Ultra Festival to be held on Oct. 6 -7.
Starting and finishing at Burgdorf Hot Springs, the race will cover 100 miles of trails and summits
crossing eight passes and gaining a total of 22,000 feet.
Runners will have 36 hours to cover the grueling course, with the starting gun sounding at 6 a.m.
Saturday, Oct. 6 and all runners due back by 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7.

McCall's Humphrey veins Cascade Crest ultra marathon
McCall's Jeremy Humphrey won the Cascade Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run held recently near
Seattle.
Humphrey finished the course in 18 hours and 31 minutes, just three minutes
short of the second- fastest time recorded in the event.
The second -place finisher in the race came in one hour and 40 minutes behind
Humprhey
"I went out feeling pretty strong, keeping my heart rate low and focusing on
eating a lot," he said.
"Once, I fell off the trail and to my horror, the slope below was so steep, I could
have really tumbled,' Humphrey said. "I grabbed the edge of the trail and climbed
back up."
Humprhey was one of the organizers of the McCall Trailrunning Classic Race
held near McCall in July. He is also the co- director of the IMTUF 100 -mile race to
be held Oct. 6 -7 and starting and ending at Burgdorf Hot Springs north of McCall.

McCall runnei shocks field by winning McCall Trtilrunning Classic
Caleb Zurstadt of McCall delivered a shocking upset victory as he won the men's 40 mile race in the
Second Annual McCall Trailrunning Classic held July 13 at Jug Mountain Ranch near McCall.
More than 200 Vail runners competed in races of 10, 20 and 40 miles on the
rugged alpine terrain surrounding McCall, the including Louie Lake Loop, Boulder
Lake and the 8,377 -foot summit of Boulder Mountain.
Zurstadt built a solid early lead, running aggressively from the start. His
knowledge of the trails gleaned from years of experience as a Forest Service
employee gave him a confidence that no one could match, race organizer Jeremy
Humphrey said
"Many people asked, 'Who is that guy in the surfing trunks,'" Humphrey said,
noting Zurstadt's floral board shorts and old sneakers looked like they might have
come from a thrift shop instead of the high -tech garments his competitors wore.

Aaron Maxwell from Enterprise, Ore., finished second nearly an hour later, and former McCall resident
Matthew Tock rounded out the podium, with a surge in the final mile.
In the 20 mile race, Todd Arndt of McCall finished second for the second year in a row, just three
minutes behind the winner.
In the 40 -mile women's race, Boise runner Joelle Vaught easily defended her title from 2012 winning
the women's race in 8:30.
The race drew talented athletes from around the western United States, several of who were attacked
by a goshawk apparently defending its territory, Humphrey said.

Entrants in this weekend's IMTUF race face ultimate test
"Being out in the mountains, you really learn a lot about yourself. " — Brandi Bolli-

BY KYLA SAWYER
for The Star -News
Running 102 miles in under two days may seem like madness to some, but Brandi Bolli- Humphrey
sees it as a goal.
Bolli- Humphrey is an organizer and competitor of this weekend's IMTUF ultra
marathon race to be held in the rugged terrain of the Payette National Forest.
fi•
IMTUF stands for Idaho Mountain Trail Ultra Festival and will begin on Friday at
Burgdorf Hot Springs north of McCall.
The course will follow a 102 -mile loop that boasts about 20,000 feet in elevation
gain and loss. The race starts at 6 a.m. on Friday and competitors have until 6
p.m. Saturday to finish.', f

BollkHumphrey and her husband, Jeremy Humphrey, are the main coordinators weekends race
of this weekend's IMTUF race.
They also were the organizers of the McCall Trailrunning Classic held in July at Jug Mountain Ranch,
a course of merely 40 miles.
"The IMTUF concept has been in my mind since we moved here in 2010," Jeremy Humphrey said.
"I would be on runs and be searching for the right acronym for the ultimate race," said Humphrey, 34,
who is also an elite runner.
Half Expected to Finish
Last year's inaugural event was held in early October and had 34 runners start with 17 completing the
entire -mile race. Seth Swanson of Missoula was the overall winner with a final time around 21 hours.
This year the event has more competitors and upwards of 50 percent are expected to finish.
"The cold was a factor last year, the nights were frigid," Humphrey said.
"We've also reversed the course this year so that a few of the harder climbs will be earlier in the race
and then finish with the more runnable final 30 miles," he said.
Just like the marathon boom in the 1970s, ultra marathon events seem to have exploded in popularity.
"We've seen it grow in just a short time. It got people talking and thinking about what is possible,"
Humphrey said.
This year's IMTUF competitors are again from all walks of fife, including runners ages 20s to 60s from
across the country. Some are professional runners with multiple ultra marathon accomplishments; some
are mothers with children at home who wake up at 4 a.m. to train, Bolli- Humphrey said.
IMTUF competitor Mariah Crump, 39 of Riggins, is looking forward to her first -mile race. Crump has
competed at other shorter distances over the last two years.
"I volunteered at an IMTUF aid station last year, walked off that course and knew that it was something
I wanted to try because of the people I met who were so inspirational," she said.
Elite Runners
Among the elite group expected to race is American ultra marathon runner Ann Trason, 53, of
Kensington, Calif. Trason, who has broken 20 world records, is competing for the first time since 2004.
"She's considered the greatest ultra marathoner and holds the world record in the 50 mile, kilometer
and mile," Humphrey said.
This will be Bolli- Humphrey's second attempt to complete the -mile course.
"You need to know when to eat.... Your brain wants to say 'stop' and you are at mile 50, so you just
turn the negative talk off and just go," she said.
IMTUF organizers hope the race will continue to grow and have a positive outcome on the recreation
economy of McCall.
"We want to continue to work with the Forest Service and focus on having a quality event," Humphrey

said.
IMTUF course is scenic, but brutal
Set in the scenic, alpine mountains of the Payette National Forest, this year's IMTUF will challenge
even the most experienced competitors.
Racers have 36 hours to complete the entire loop course that includes a total elevation gain and loss
of about 22,000 feet.
Competitors must carry their own food, water, headlamps and clothing. Pacers are allowed and there
are 15 check points and aide stations runners must reach before specific cut -off times or they are

Each of the aid stations is staffed with volunteer amateur radio operators for communication.
The race begins and ends at Burgdorf Hot Springs and includes a variety of local trails and drainages.
Running in the dark through the mountains, the threat of hot weather and carrying enough food and

McCall woman returns home to run in New York Marathon
BY TOM GROTE
The Star -News
When Tenessa Roizman came home to New York City, she decided to take a run around her old
neighborhoods - one that lasted 26.2 miles.
The McCall resident ran her first -ever marathon during last
week's New York City Marathon, which featured a running
tour through all five of the city's boroughs.
Roizman, 29, a personal trainer, was pleased with her
performance, finishing in the middle of the pack of the
record -high 50,000 entrants.
She achieved her goal of finishing the run from Staten
Island to Central Park in less than 4-1/2 hours.
Her time was 4 hours 26 minutes, 15 seconds, including
an eight - minute bathroom break. The race was won by
Priscah Jeptoo of Kenya with a time of 2:25:07.
Roizman qualified for the race by raising $3,000 for
Orange Laces, a nonprofit group operated by main race
sponsor ING to encourage a healthy, active lifestyle for
elementary and middle school students nationwide.
She was scheduled to run in the 2012 marathon, but that
race was cancelled at the last minute after the devastation of
Superstorm Sandy swept the eastern seaboard. Her
invitation carried over to this year.

Tight Security
Tensions and security were high for the Nov. 3 race, coming just months after the bombings at the
Boston Marathon in April that killed three people and wounded more than 250 others.
"it was an amazing experience," Roizman said of the massive crowd of runners who gathered for the
start. Bom and raised in Queens, she left the city five years ago to move to McCall.
"It was really cool to be pushed along by random strangers," she said. "Knowing A was my home town
was surreal."
Roizman began to struggle at about mile 22, but pushed ahead.
"I just told myself to just shuffle your feet, you're almost there," she said. "As soon as I turned into the
park, the crowd was cheering us on and helped give me a boost to the end. I was very happy to have
finished."
Roizman is not sure she will compete in a future New York City Marathon, but the experience from this
year's race is something she will cherish for the rest of her life.

Breast - cancer survivor makes a statement by entering ultra
runs
Andrea Parnett, 65, covered 175 miles during 2014
'7 wanted to show that (I) could still run some pretty incredible trails and country. " —
Andrea Parnett
Back To IndextMenu
A year after surviving breast cancer, Andrea Parnett decided recovery did not mean relaxing. It meant
running for miles up and down mountains.
Earlier this month, Parnett, 65, of New Meadows, ran in the Foothills Frenzy
near Boise, a race that covered 32 miles and 6,200 feet of climbing.
It was appropriate the race took place during Breast Cancer Awareness Month ^ r, .
celebrated each October, but Parnett's journey starting months before. +
When she crossed the finished line of the Foothills Frenzy, it was the last of five
long -distance races that she had competed since January covering more than
175 miles over challenging terrain and through sometimes miserable weather.Ftj:
Parnett is an experienced long- distance runner, having run her first traditional t
marathon of 26 miles at age 31 and competing in six Boston Marathons between
1987 and 2011.;1 r
But after her bout with cancer, she was determined to show herself she had
more than merely recovered.'
"I wanted to show that not just a 65 year old, but one who was rising to many
challenges, could still be healthy and run some pretty incredible trails and Andres Pamett runs the
country," Parnett said. Poothi➢s Prenry 5oK
lace earlier this month.
Started In January
She started 2014 with the Wilson Creek Frozen 50K held in January in the Owyhee Mountains in the
southern end of the state, where she finished first in her age group. In March, she ran a 50 -mile race on
Antelope Island in Utah.
June saw Parnett entered in the River of No Return 50k in Challis. "It was the most difficult race ever
for me, even though having run 51 marathons now in a lifetime, it took over 9 hours," she said.
A month later, she entered the Wild Idaho 50k, which covered 33 miles of Boise County with an
elevation gain of 9,000 feet and temperatures up to 92 degrees. The course took her 11 hours to
complete.
"I ran this race practically all alone and could hear bird and crickets, and distant, then close flowing
creeks, dumping into the Middle Fork of the Payette," Parnett said.
For the Foothills Frenzy race, Parnett faced adversity before the race even starting, coming down with
a case of food poisoning and severely pulling a muscle. Undeterred, she finished 20 minutes faster than
her result the previous year in the same race.
Her year of extreme racing has reminded Parnett of the power of perseverance.
"I feel very fortunate to be able to still run as I do and offer the idea just to keep going when feeling
down or compromised, say my prayers and get back out as much as I can for my abilities," she said.

Sock Hops: Vandal star runner Danner's routines help her on the X -C course
"Sometimes I play the lyrics oja song over and over in my head while I run. "— Bethany
Danner
BY KYLA SAWYER
for The Star -News
Wearing the same socks during every race may not make Vandal cross - country star Bethany Danner
run faster. but it can't hurt.
Danner plans to wear the same socks, do the same
workout and take the same ice bath before Saturday's Idaho
2A State Cross Country Championship at Farragut State
Park near Coeur d'Alene.
The routine seems to be working as Danner, a senior at
McCall- Donnelly High School, will make her third trip to the
state cross - country meet.
Last week, Danner finished second at the 2A Western
Idaho Conference District Championship held at McCall's
Jug Mountain Ranch and is the only Vandal runner that
qualified for the state meet this year.
"Consistency is her key," M-D coach Bill Anderson said
"Bethany trains constantly and has a great attitude about
always working towards a goal."
Danner's positive attitude and dedication to the sport is
why Anderson believes she will do well at state. She finished
19th overall in the women's 5,000 -meter race last year and
medaled for eighth place her sophomore year.
Danner started competing in cross - country in sixth grade.
Her mother, Debbie Wallace of McCall, is a runner and
helped nudge her into the sport. The physical demands of
training are rigorous, and she also has struggled with the
mental aspects of running.
"I was really having a tough time with being positive, so at
the end of last season I decided to stop with the negative
imagery before a race and only positively visualize races,"
she said.

Vandal cross-muntry runner Bethany Danner says
her success is due to hard work -and the same
socks.
Danner runs through each race course in her head before the staring gun goes off. She also has some
mental tricks to help her find her own rhythm.
"Sometimes I play the lyrics of a song over and over in my head while I run," she said. "Or I might have
a mantra I'm saying over and over in the head, like 'Who are you? Pass her!'"
While the positive visualization and training routines have helped, Danner realizes she can't control
every aspect of race day.
"I can't control the weather, so I try instead to control other things," she said "I know even if it's raining,
I've done everything i can to put myself in my best position."
She credits her coaches and Pat Zak, her physical therapist, for supporting her.
"I combine long runs and interval training when I run," Danner said. "And Pat advises me on things
such as drinking chocolate milk after a hard workout and taking ice baths at night to recover."
After graduation in May, Danner hopes to continue her running career in college.
"I'm not exactly sure where that will be yet, but I hope running will take me wherever it can," she said.

Cascade runners to lift Vandal X -C team as 2016 seasons starts
BY BEN FLETCHER
for The Star -News
Youth Will need to step up as the McCall- Donnelly cross - country team sets a course for success in
2016.
The team Will lean on 13 freshmen and no seniors, but
that's not a bad thing, coach Bill Anderson said.
The lone upperclassman on the girls' roster is reigning 1A
state champion Sage Way, a sophomore who attends
Cascade High School and runs with M -D under a
cooperative agreement.
"Sage is going to be a big asset this year," Anderson said.
"We're hoping she'll repeat as state champion."
Fayla Swift is another freshman to watch, he said.
The boys' team is a bit more seasoned. Wyatt Stocks, a
sophomore attending Cascade, and Zach McCammon, a
junior from Cascade, both qualified for the 1A state meet in
2015.
The Vandal runners officially opened their season on
Wednesday at the New Plymouth Invitational, but results
were not available.

Front to back, Vandals Wyatt Stocks (attending
Cascade High School), Zech McCammon
(Cascade), Hunter Wilcox, Jack Kindall and
Landon Vance take off at the start of Saturday's
Dash & Splash race at Ponderosa State Park.
They will hit the course again on Sept. 8 at the Weiser Invitational.
Anderson has the youngest stable of runners he's worked with during his coaching tenure.
"We've got some talent," Anderson said, "But it may take some time before we experience that. We're
making some progress."
The runners got a warm -up on Saturday with the non - scored Dash and Splash hosted by the Vandals
at Ponderosa Park.
McCammon finished fourth out of 100 boys runners. The girls fared even better Saturday, with Brynne
Kundrick taking fourth and finishing ahead of Way, who took 11th.
"She'll be a good runner for us," Anderson said of Kundrick. "She's young and very talented."

Both runners helped the Vandal girls finish fifth in team
