Vandal track stand -out Barth takes her sport in stride
Junior looks to repeat goldmedal performance at state in 400
BY KYLA SAWYER
for The Star -News
The 400 -meter dash marks the boundary between sprints and a middle- distance race, but McCall -
Donnelly High School runner Kara Barth takes 4 all in stride.
In an event that takes both speed and endurance to cover one lap around the track competitively in
less than 60 seconds, Barth hopes to repeat winning a state championship title in the 400 when the
team competes at the 2A State Track & Field Meet this weekend in Base.
'As a freshman, she took third at state and then broke the school record last year with the win her
sophomore year,' coach Bill Anderson said. "When that happens you know you have something
special."
Kara's father, John Barth, remembers watching his daughter running in the 400 in eighth grade.
"I was thinking, wow, this is more than just participating, this is something she's excelling at," John
Barth said.
For Kara, a junior, track was something her friends encouraged her to do, and the 400 is something
she just connected with.
"I ended up falling in love with it," Barth said. "It just ended up being something that I enjoy doing and
I'm goad at."
Record- Breaking Runs
Barth's fastest time in the 400 so far is 57.53 seconds- She also runs the 400 leg for both the Vandals'
sprint medley relay and 4x400 relay teams.
This year she also took on the 200 -meter sprint race — an event she is now close to breaking another
school record, Anderson said.
"1 just approach the 400 how it is," Barth said. "I know in the end it's worth it, it's worth the pain to
succeed in something that's hard."
'Kara has all the physical tools, a graceful stride and she knows the mental part of running," Anderson
said
Barth suffered a strained hamstring during the 400 at the 2A District Ill Track and Field Meet last
weekend and was unable to compete in the final 200 or 4x400 relay races.
The strain happened just after the start of the race while exiting the blocks and Barth fought through
tears to win first place.
"We could tell something was wrong,* Anderson said. 'Ifs really amazing she had enough guts and
fortitude to finish the race_"
Teammate Ruth Lewinski replaced Barth for the anchor leg of the 4x400 and helped the team win first
place and a fourth time state berth for M -D in the event.
"I've been working with physical therapy and exercise so it will be good for state," Barth said.
Barth's times and performances have already garnered the notice of college track and field coaches.
"This year fell like a realty good year and even with this speed bump of hurting myself A give me a
chance to look forward to next year knowing I can improve even more,' she said.

McCall woman avoids Boston Marathon blasts
Nancy Hatfield finished race hour before explosions
BY TOM GROTE
The Star -News
Nancy Hatfield was far from the scene when two bombs exploded on Monday at the finish line of the
Boston Marathon, but she was shaken by the experience nonetheless.
Hatfield, of McCall, ran through the finish line, and past the unexploded bombs, about an
hour before the horrific explosions that killed three people and injured more than 170
others.
"It was one of those things; luckily I was not there when it happened," Hatfield, 56, said in
an interview after returning home on Tuesday.
Nancy Hethetd Although Hatfield was safe, there was no way to tell her family, g y y, including her husband,
Travis, daughter Natalie of McCall and daughter Karla of Carlsbad, Calif.
Hatfield called Travis at 2:23 p.m., about one -half hour before the explosions, to tell him she had
finished the race in good shape.
It was her seventh Boston Marathon since 1992 and her 47th marathon since 1991.
Hatfield and a traveling companion had picked up her gear and entered the subway to travel back to
their car.
Soon after, the train stopped at a station and an announcer told the passengers they had to get off
immediately due to an unspecified emergency.
As they walked the three miles to their car, they gradually became aware of what had happened,
including seeing fleets of ambulances entering and leaving hospitals along their route.
Hatfield tried to call her family, but a wave of cellphone activity after the blast crashed the Boston
telecommunications network.
Fearing the Worst
At the same time, Travis Hatfield and his daughters were frantically trying to reach Nancy but could
only access her voice mail.
"Natalie called and some guy answered the phone," Travis Hatfield said. "She immediately hung up,
because she didn't want to know what might have happened."
The overload in the cellphone system apparently led to Nancy's telephone number ringing on another
phone, but the family feared the worst.
"In your mind you visualize that she's laying on the ground and somebody picked up her phone,"
Travis said.
Finally, an hour after the bombings, the family received a text message from Nancy that she was
alright.
Until the blasts, Hatfield was enjoying what she said was the best race day she had spent in Boston.
"It was a perfect weather day, d was festive, and fun out on the course," she said. "All along the route
people were handing out oranges and popsicles."
The bombings were especially tragic because of the innocence of the event and the people
participating, she said.
"I feel so sad. Why would someone do what they did?" she said. "This was not a political event, it was
just something put on by a good community."
Hatfield has already qualified for the 2014 Boston Marathon and fully intends to take part.
"If I didn't go, then that's what these people want," she said, referring to those who exploded the
bombs.

McCall runner returns to marathon a year after bombings
BY TOM GROTE
The Star -News
Smiling faces were everywhere Nancy Hatfield looked as she ran the route of the Boston Marathon on
Monday. "It was a day full of happiness and sunshine," she said.
Hatfield, of McCall, was a participant in the 2013 marathon, where two homemade
bombs exploded near the finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 250 others.
During the 2013 race, she passed the sites of the explosives about an hour before they
were detonated by two brothers motivated by extremist Islamist beliefs.
Although she was not injured Hatfield, 57, was unable to contact family members for an
Nwn Hntfi ?I.i hour after the blasts due to an overload of the Boston cellphone system.
After last year's marathon, Hatfield said she fully intended to return on Monday, and she did so without
hesitation.
"From the minute I got off the plane, it was happiness," said Hatfield, a Realtor. "Everyone was so nice
and friendly; I never once saw a disgruntled person."
Security was understandably heavy, but Hatfield said the event ran surprisingly smoothly. Crowds of
people lined the 2 6-mite route, many of them bearing signs thanking the runners for taking part.
"There were babies in their parents' arms, and people on the sidewalk in their wheelchairs," she said.
"No one was afraid to come out."
Hatfield felt no apprehension as she approached the finish line on Boylston Street and site of the 2013
bombs.
"It was so beautiful and sunny, I ran right by the bleachers and the flags, and felt completely safe," she
said.
Monday's race was the eighth time Hatfield has run the Boston Marathon in the last 22 years and her
51 st marathon overall.
Her time of 3 hours, 42 minutes and 35 second was nearly identical to the time in her first Boston
Marathon and just a minute slower than last year's time.
Two sayings that Hatfield was told before the race helped her deal with what could have been a
disturbing experience.
"One was, 'Always believe that something wonderful is about to happen,' and the other was, 'Never let
fear decide your future," she said.

Cascade track and field coach Conor Kennedy is excited to see what this years crop of freshman
athletes can do.
"We have a much larger turnout in numbers for our team this year," Kennedy

The Ramblers will test their new runners, jumpers and throwers at their first

Cascade has about 24 athletes on the roster, up from the 15 students who
finished the season last year, Kennedy said.
Helping the Ramblers to get off on the right foot are returning state qualifiers

Both seniors competed at the state championships in triple jump last year,
where Logan leapt to a bronze medal and Crosby finished 11th overall.
Junior Rob Pair Rob Pair also qualified at state in the pole vault and is expected

Way, McCammon lead Vandals at Gibb Floyd X -C meet
BY BEN FLETCHER
for The Star -News
McCall- Donnelly's Sage Way and Zach McCammon both netted top 20 finishes at the Gibb Floyd
Invitational cross country meet in Kuna last Saturday.
Vandals freshman Brynne Kundrick also won the girls
junior varsity race as just three M -D runners competed with
the varsity ranks at the mufti-class meet that featured mostly
5A competition.
Way and McCammon, both of whom attend Cascade but
run with the Vandals as part of a co-op agreement, were
among the three runners, also joined by M -D junior Thomas
Gebhards.
Way finished the girls race 19th with a time of 21 minutes,
3.35 seconds, but has been holding back while nursing a
strained hip flexor, M -D Coach Bill Anderson said.
McCammon took home a 20th -place finish with a time of
17:50.54, less than a minute behind boys overall winner,
Eagle's Taylor Phillips, who ran the course in 16:26.54.
Gebhards' time of 19:25.41 was good enough for 54th.

seconds.
"She is such an intense competitor," Anderson said. "She always gives everything she's got."
Two more freshmen rounded out M -D's top three runners on the girls side. Fayla Swift took home a
12th place finish (23:27.48) while trimming her personal best time. Victoria Halcom took 34th (24:38.47).
The times were good enough to gamer the Vandals a third -place finish in JV team standings.
Miles Stanford led the M -D boys in the JV race, nabbing a top 25 finish. Stanford ran the course in
19:34.68, good enough for 24th. Landon Vance (37th, 19.54.22) and Jack Kindall (40th, 20:02.85) paced

Rambler Way wins district X -C meet, looks to repeat at state
BY BEN FLETCtER
for The Star -News
Cascade runner Sage Way took home top honors last week during the 1A District 111 Championships at
Eagle Island State Park.
Way posted a time of 20 minutes, 15.16 seconds to top the medal stand.
The win paves the way for Way, who competed with McCall - Donnelly cross - country team during the
regular season, to defend her 1A state title on Saturday at the Portneuf Wellness Complex in Pocatello.
On Oct. 12, Way rested an injured hip and watched from the sidelines while her teammates competed
at the Winston Tilzey meet. The rest paid off.
"She may not be a hundred pounds, but she is tough as nails; M-D Coach Bill Anderson said of Way.
"She ran through a nagging hip flexor to destroy the competition by over 30 seconds,"
On the boys side, Way's schoolmate, Zach McCammon, also qualified for state after gutting his way to
a sixth -place finish by running the 5,000 meter course in 17:48.89.
"He is one of the more determined athletes I've ever seen," Anderson said.
Isaac Meyers joined Cascade runners at the 1A district meet, turning in a time of 21:48.67 to finish
451h. Daniel Dixon, of Greenleaf Friends Academy, won the boys race with a time of 16:24.55.
Miles Stanford, a Council student who ran with M -D this season under a co-op agreement, also
qualified for state, finishing 14th with a time of 18:35.74.

Kundrick finishes 10th, M -D girls take 8th at 2A state cross - country meet
BY BEN FLETCHER
for The Star -News
Freshman Brynne Kundrick finished 10th overall to spur the McCall - Donnelly girls cross country team
to an eighth -place finish at the 2A state championship last Saturday in Pocatello.
Kundrick ran the 5,000 meter course at the Portneuf
Wellness Complex in 20 minutes, 40.40 seconds.
The freshman runner was rated 15th going into the state
race after finishing fourth at the district meet on Oct. 19, but
"dug down deep," coach Bill Anderson said.
"Brynne ran a great race," Anderson said. "This little girl
has a tiger's heart. She is such a tough competitor."
Thomas Gebhards, a junior, was the top finisher for the M-
D boys, taking home 28th after posting a time of 18:46.69.
Hunter Wilcox's time of 20:23.18 slotted the freshman runner
62nd overall.
The M -D girls finished third at districts to qualify as a team
for state, where they took home eighth -place with a score of
201. Soda Springs won top honors with 29.
Fayla Swift was M -D's next best individual finisher in the

his young stable of runners, who improved week after week this season.
Every runner on the girls team that represented M -D in the 2A state race was a freshman.
"It was a great experience for these young athletes," Anderson said. "Next year they'll make an even
