PROCLAMATION CELEBRATING MARY FRANCIS HALEY ON THE
OCCASION OF HER 100TH BIRTHDAY
WHEREAS: Mary Francis "Franny" Odiorne was born on September 24, 1923, to Cornelius and
Mary (Donahue) Odiorne in Medford Massachusetts, where they lived along with her younger
brother Thomas; and
WHEREAS: Mary graduated from Medford High School, Class of 1941, and joined the insurance
industry with a position at John Hancock Financial; and
WHEREAS: Mary loved to "travel and go places", including trips to Florida with friends and a
memorable cross-country train trip where she changed trains in Chicago and saw the town, then
continued to California to see the Rose Bowl and the big parade; and
WHEREAS: Mary married Walter X. Haley in Cambridge in 1945 after the conclusion of his
service as a US Marine in the South Pacific during World War II; and
WHEREAS: Mary and Walter lived in Cambridge, then moved to Watertown in 1966
where Mary became bank teller at Freedom Federal Savings Bank in Watertown Square; and
WHEREAS: Mary has been known for hosting family holidays with wonderful food including her
signature Roast Beef with Yorkshire Pudding at Christmas, her knitting of comfy sweaters for
beloved niece and nephew Ann and Dan, and her skill as a seamstress making her own stylish
clothing; and
WHEREAS: Mary and Walter continued to travel to Hawaii, Bermuda, St. Thomas and Canada
until Walter's death in 1990; and
WHEREAS: Mary was a voracious reader, and kept well informed of the world around her with
subscriptions to Newsweek and Bloomberg Reports; and
WHEREAS: Above all, Mary is known for her intelligence, good spirits and love of family and
friends.
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the City Council of the City of Watertown extends its
congratulations to: Mary Francis Haley on her 100TH Birthday.
