HomeMy Public PortalAbout23-09-26 Proclamation: Indigenous Peoples DayWatertown City Council Administration Building 149 Main Street Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 617-972-6470 INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY PROCLAMATION WHEREAS: President Biden has proclaimed the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day in October, 2021; and WHEREAS: Watertown is located on the lands of the Pequossette band of the Massachusett people who were the first inhabitants and caretakers of this land; and WHEREAS: These Indigenous Peoples have called this place home since time immemorial; and WHEREAS: The many contributions to our communities through Indigenous Peoples knowledge, labor, technology, science, philosophy, culture, and arts have substantially shaped the character of Watertown; and WHEREAS: Many who live, study, and work in Watertown are settlers, immigrants, or descendants of those who originally occupied this land or were forcefully brought to this land; NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the City of Watertown hereby proclaims October 9, 2023 INDIGENOUS PEOPLES DAY, and encourages all community members to join in its observance IN WITNESS HEREOF, I have hereunto set our hand and Caused the Great Seal of the City of Watertown to be affixed On this 26th day qj September 2023 Mark S.
