HomeMy Public PortalAboutNauset Region Health & Wellness -- 5/26/2010 Minutes Health and Wellness Subcommittee 4PpggrEs Meeting of May 26,2010 Held at the Nauset Administration Building The meeting was called to order at 5:05 p.m.by Chair Sarah Blackwell For the committee: Sarah Blackwell,Maggie Davis,Lori McKenzie,Sue Deschamps, Heather Bailey,Judy Walsh,Regina Kruczynska,Mara Liebling,Dawn Lee,and Richard Hoffmann Agenda Changes Chair Sarah Blackwell spoke with Tom Conrad about sending out a survey to high school students and would like the committee to generate some questions. Review the Charge The Subcommittee will once again review the charge and also review the policy on health and wellness teaching staff new ways to work and prepare foods. Dr.Hoffmann suggested the subcommittee review priority areas and the child Nutrition Act. (adapted from USDA) Review currents state of affairs vs.what is the ideal. Increase Education - - Emphasis on parent component and start at the elementary and the middle school. Include parents in on the survey. Sue Deschamps indicated that in her P.E.class K-5,students learn about the food pyramid,fitness pyramid,and how food helps promote good bodies. - Eastham Elementary Wellness Fair - Channel information through Parent Group - Two Angry Moms video - Film cooking shows on Channel 17,NHS TV - Introduce a new change in menu,letter to parent the week before,nutritional value of food item - Recipe sharing—standardized recipes—breakdown recipes for family use Improve Nutrition Standards - USDA Guidelines - Look at typical menus—are we meeting the standards? Data Needs - What happens K-5 Health Education—what does curriculum look like at high school and middle school? - What is sold in school? Power Aid,vending machines? - What do we have now? Where do we want to be? Fill in the gap. Nutrient Analysis - Take a menu—to what degree are we meeting those needs? - Establish standards for foods and beverages sold in school - Examine the supply list and black out offerings you do not want (it was noted that you have to buy canned and frozen because of the volume) - Observed how it is being served—what is the waste? Enhance Food Safety - Storing,Serving - Ground Beef,Risky Foods? - Do we provide food that is safe? - Train Staffs—incremental changes Research and Improve Financial Viability - Package and sell leftover meals - Sell to Council on Aging - Volunteers and students cannot volunteer in the kitchen - Need a formal training program - Purchase better equipment Wellness Committee Meeting of May 26, 2010 - Grants - Buy overflow from Farmer's Market at the end of the day Nauset Health and Wellness Policy The policy needs to be reviewed and possible rewritten. Discussion was held regarding the breakfast that was served to students before MCAS testing at the Eddy School. (sugary cereal,fruit loops) Parents not happy. Typical Meal at Nauset High School Homemade soup every day—chicken and rice,chicken noodle,chicken vegetable,tomato vegetable, Macaroni and Cheese and Tomato,Minestrone,Mexican Corn Chowder,Spicy Oriental. Soups are a la carte. (no reimbursement)Vegetarian chili could count as a meal. Also served broccoli and cheese with baked potato. Discussion was held relative to reimbursable vs. not reimbursable meals. Make the soup and salad a reimbursable meal. Chocolate and Strawberry milk should not be sold.Reimbursable vs. a la carte— try to get kids to eat lunch. Survey Chair Sarah Blackwell asked the Committee to think about questions for the survey. Discussion was held relative to creating the actual form and have students fill it out. Maggie Davis suggested that the survey be computerized so that things can be tabulated and data analyzed. Samples of questions: How often do you buy lunch? How often do you purchase a la carte? What kind of food do you like? Do you have a preference of foods you eat,i.e.Vegetarian,Vegan,meat based diet? How often do you buy the school lunch in a week? Do you look at the school menu? One open ended question—What do you think is healthy? Email questions to Sarah Blackewell and copy Ann Tefft. Involve Kathy Schrock to get survey monkey on face book. The subcommittee would like one weeks worth of tabulation—how many purchased—what products? Working Groups Education—Sue Deschamps,Regina Kruczynska, and Dawn Lee Food Quality—Mara Liebling,Judy Walsh Training for food service people—Lori McKenzie and Richard Hoffmann Profit/Loss Data—Heather Bailey Approval of Minutes On a motion by Heather Bailey,seconded by Maggie Davis, it was voted to approve the minutes of the April 28,2010 meeting.
