HomeMy Public PortalAboutNauset Region Health & Wellness -- 6/23/2010 Minutes Health and Wellness Subcommittee Meeting of June 23,2010 Held at the Nauset Administration Building AppADIEB Attending for the Committee: Sarah Blackwell,Heather Bailey,Maggie Davis,Susan Deschamps, Regina Kruczynska,Dawn Lee,Mara Leibling,Lori McKenzie,Mary Ellen Reed,Judy Welch and Richard Hoffmann Call to Order: The meeting was called to order at 5:06 PM by Chair Sarah Blackwell II. Discuss Survey: Chair Blackwell informed the Committee that Maggie Davis had compiled and posted a survey on Survey Monkey. The survey can be accessed online at www.surveymonkey.com/nausetstudents. Chair Blackwell has recently spoken to Nauset High School Principal Tom Conrad and provided him with a flyer to be distributed. Lori McKenzie, Nauset Food Service Director,has done some online research on other school websites and found surveys posted there,along with nutrition information on all meals served. Dr.Hoffmann suggested integrating the survey along with nutritional information on the Nauset website would be a good summer project for the Committee. Maggie Davis offered to compile nutritional information on all meals served. III. Data Sharing: Vending Machines: Lori McKenzie provided a handout of all Nauset vending machines and their contents to the Committee. All beverage contents available to students are approved by ABA(American Beverage Association). There is no soda available. All snacks are on the"A List".Dr.Hoffmann suggested Committee members visit www.johnstalkerinsitiute.org for"A List'nutritional information and guidance on wellness. Candy and other snack items are available in the High School store. All profits from sales at the store go to support clubs and activities. Production Records: Lori McKenzie went over the production records,copies of which were given to the Committee. Every day at the high school there are 3 each for lunch of hot and cold meals,as well as 3 choices of salad. Food preparation starts at 7:30 and lunch begins at 10:20.Past production records are used to determine the quantities of each choice. Maggie Davis suggested Lori look into production software that is available. All meals are paid for with cash. Discussion on the feasibility of a prepaid/debit card system. Lori has looked into this option and the cost is prohibitive-$30,000.00 for a basic system. Discussion on removing corn syrup and fructose from student choices as well as including healthier snack alternatives in the school store. IV. Priority Goals: It was determined that working groups would work on already established goals. Increase education about healthy eating-Education working group Improve nutrition standards; Serve more healthy food;Establish standards for foods&beverages sold or offered in schools;Enhance food safety-Food Quality working group Train people who prepare school meals-Training for Food Service Personnel working group Research and improve financial viability;Provide schools with better equipment-Profit/Loss Data working group V. Establish Working Groups: The working groups have been finalized as follows: • Education-Sue Deschamps,Regina Kruczynska,Dawn Lee • Food Quality-Mara Leibling,Judy Walsh,Maggie Davis • Training for food service personnel-Lori McKenzie,Richard Hoffmann • Profit/Loss Data-Heather Bailey,Lori McKenzie,Mary Ellen Reed Health &Wellness Subcommittee 1 6/23/10 Discussion on how to begin working in groups. Maggie Davis suggested the Committee look for an interested philanthropist in the area to support healthier choices in the school.Discussion on when and how the working groups will meet. It was determined that after adjournment the groups would get together to set up a meeting schedule and gqa s. .IV. Approval of Minutes: On a motion by Lori McKenzie,seconded by Heather Bailey it was voted to approve the minutes of the May 26,2010 meeting. VII. Data Needs/Data Sharing: No discussion at this time.
