HomeMy Public PortalAboutNauset Region Health & Wellness -- 9/29/2010 Minutes Health and Wellness Subcommittee Meeting Minutes of September 29, 2010 Present for the Committee: Chair Blackwell, Heather Bailey, Sue Deschamps, Regina Kruczynska, Dawn Lee, Mara Liebling, Mary Ellen Reed, Lori McKenzie, and Maggie Davis Others Present: Dion Dugan, Vice Chair of the Nauset Regional School Committee CALL TO ORDER Chair Blackwell called the meeting to order at 5:04 p.m. CITIZENS SPEAK —None PRIORTY BUSINESS Survey Update It was reported that there were no results from the survey indicating that perhaps something happened with the link. Maggie Davis will send again and Kathy Schrock will resend to all students at the Nauset Middle and High Schools. It was suggested that the survey be promoted in the Daily Bulletin at school, through morning announcements, and P.E. and Health teachers should promote participation in class. School Visits It was decided that the committee would split in two groups, one visiting the High School cafeteria on October 22nd at 10:00 a.m. and the other visiting the Middle School cafeteria on October 20th at 11:00 a.m. Discussion ensued regarding the menu, particularly breakfast for lunch, Oreo cookies, and the need to offer better selections. Vending Machines Discussion relative to the sugar content in the drinks was discussed. Mara Liebling volunteered to research the Stonyfield Vending Machine Program. It was suggested that healthier snack options in the vending machines be put on the survey, such as granola bars, yogurt, etc. INFORMATION AND REPORTS Education Subcommittee Sue Deschamps reported that their group discussed talking with P.E./Health teachers, PTA groups, and parents to promote health and wellness. It was requested that nutrition education be incorporated into the Health/P.E. curriculums focusing on guiding students to make healthy choices. Put healthy eating posters in cafeteria to reinforce good choices. Food quality Subcommittee Committee members are working on the vending machine analysis. It was requested that the portions served to students be forwarded to Maggie Davis. Training Subcommittee Lori McKenzie will be attending a National School Cafeteria Association meeting at the end of the month. It was suggested that the John Stalker Institute be contacted regarding workshops and training opportunities and inviting other districts and charter schools to attend. It was suggested that workshops be built into cafeteria manager's schedules next year Chair Blackwell asked the committee to review the documentary video, "Two Angry Moms"at the next meeting. It was suggested that flyers or a petition be circulated at the Wellfleet Oyster Festival. Heather Bailey will be working on this and send it to committee members and the Superintendent for approval. It was also suggested that the Committee members read the new legislation that was attached to their agendas. APPROVAL OF MINUTES On a motion by Mary Ellen Reed, seconded by Heather Bailey, it was voted to approve the minutes of June 23, 2010. ADJOURNMENT On a motion by Sue Deschamps, seconded by Heather Bailey, it was voted to adjourn the meeting at 6:15 p.m. Next Meeting: October 27, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. -r.i
