Health and Wellness Subcommittee Meeting
Minutes of October 27, 2010
Present for the Committee: Chair Blackwell, Heather Bailey, Sue Deschamps,
Regina Kruczynska, Dawn Lee, Mary Ellen Reed,
Lori McKenzie, and Maggie Davis
Some members viewed the video, "Two Angry Moms"at 4:00 p.m. The regular meeting was
called to order at 5:05 p.m. by Chair Blackwell.
CITIZENS SPEAK —None
PRIORTY BUSINESS
The video was discussed as well as the need to get parents involved.
Survey Update
Maggie Davis reported on the survey indicating a good response with 391 participants.
The questions and answers were reviewed, lists of favorite and least favorite foods were
discussed, as well as eating habits. Maggie will "fine tune"the survey and bring further
information to the next meeting.
School Visits
Members of the committee who visited and ate in the cafeteria in the Middle School and High
School reported findings to the other members. It was their thought that a lot of things could be
adjusted a bit to make a more nutritious meal. (For example: choose whole grain whenever
possible, do not serve iceberg lettuce, rice needs to taste better, salsa did not taste good)
At the High School the members thought students had too many choices, the presentation was
poor, the environment unappealing and the flow poorly executed. The"Grab and Go"room
needs to be incorporated into the regular lunch line. It was also noted that the vending machines
were in operation outside the library during lunch and that approximately 30 students were
buying candy and drinks for lunch.
A discussion was held regarding having vitamin water rather than Fuze drinks. A question was
raised as to whether or not it was a state mandate to turn off vending machines during school
hours. Getting better choices in vending machines was also discussed.
The committee suggested that soups be prepared and students serve themselves to a 12 oz. bowl
with a side salad. The committee did not think the pricing was adequate for some of the items.
It was suggested that there be only two choices per day—a meal and one homemade soup with a
salad. The committee thought tap water should be available and that the Director of Food
Services increase the quality of food being served.
Working in Subgroups
At approximately 5:55 p.m., the committee broke into their subgroups and reviewed the
"suggested action steps for each committee" as outlined. At the next meeting, each group will
indicate their ACTION items or FOCUS items in the areas of education, food quality, training,
and financial data.
Some items that need clarification:
1. Are all schools running in the red?
2. Market better! Who is making the menu? Make it look better for all schools.
3. Ordering procedures—spreadsheets should be made available for managers so they can
just check of what they want each week/month. How do mangers place food orders?
4. Meet with cafeteria managers as a group/team...Has this been done?
5. Professional days—in this negotiating year, include 2 professional days for cafeteria
managers and bring in someone from Stalker Institute etc.
6. Reorganize the Food Services Dept. so that all sites come under management by the Director?
7. The financial subgroup would like to look at the financial data.
8. Can there be a nutrition link to the menus?
ADJOURNMENT
The meeting adjourned at 6:20 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann Tefft, recording secretary
