HomeMy Public PortalAboutNauset Region Health & Wellness -- 12/15/2010 Minutes Health and Wellness Subcommittee Meeting Minutes of December 15, 2010 Present for the Committee: Chair Blackwell, Heather Bailey, Sue Deschamps, Maggie Davis, Judy Welch, Regina Kruczynska, Dawn Lee , and Mara Liebling. Chair Blackwell called the meeting to order at 5:05 p.m. CITIZENS SPEAK —None PRIORTY BUSINESS Visit to High School Cafeteria Chair Blackwell reported that she and Maggie Davis visited the High School cafeteria. They would like to see a total renovation of the cafeteria, which was built in 1972. (It was noted that Tom Conrad has investigated this on numerous occasions with a cost estimate of$250,000+.) It was also noted that the Nauset School District buys less fresh fruits and vegetables than anyone in the area. Fancy Fruit has provided some fruit, sold outside the cafeteria in a kiosk, which students purchase during lunch time. Chair Blackwell reported that she has received a donation from Cape Associates for $100 to go toward the purchase of picnic tables at the Middle School. She also received a donation of 6 picnic tables from Mid Cape Home Centers for the Middle School. Review of the Nauset Wellness Policy The Committee reviewed Items 1-3 of the Wellness Policy making additions, deletions and revisions. Vending machine use and the need for healthier choices was discussed. Providing fewer but better choices each day was also discussed with the feeling that it would be more cost effective as well. The Committee was in agreement that more vegetables should be incorporated into the meals. For example; vegetable pizza has a few green peppers on it, why not more vegetables? The vegetable soup had hardly any vegetables in it and the salads were very skimpy. The Committee decided that breakfast cereals containing sugar such as "Fruit Loops"should be taken out of the schools The need for professional development for the cafeteria staff was discussed. It was suggested that the district seek funding for training food service personnel— 1 day each year. A suggestion was made to put healthy choice posters in the cafeteria, perhaps have a video running that discusses health and wellness (like in doctor's offices), menu posted with vitamins, calories, etc. It was noted that there is too much sodium in school menus. The Committee felt the need for more educational information. (UMass Cooperative Extension, Eat Right Montana, University of Mississippi—redesign of cafeteria) Free information included Team Nutrition—teachers can apply and get free sets of materials. Physical Education and recess was discussed, particularly indoor recess. The wind chill factor was mentioned and Wellfleet Elementary School just reviewed the impacts of the wind chill on children at recess. Their findings concluded that within 30 seconds frost bite can set in and that children in Wellfleet can go outside and RUN AROUND for no longer than 10 minutes then come back inside. It was also suggested that the Committee ask Administration to reinstate Physical Education at Orleans Elementary School to 100%. The Committee also hoped that Physical Education and Health could be standardized and presented at each school. Artificial sweeteners were discussed and it was the suggestion of the Committee to not allow drinks in the schools containing artificial sweeteners. The use of regular and vitamin water was discussed. Offering town water and having it piped in was also mentioned, thus eliminating the bottled water and excessive trash. The Wellness Committee also suggested have a Psychologist on the Committee as well as students from the high school and middle school.
