Subject: All Citizens Access Committee March 18, 2011 Meeting Minutes
Hi Colette, Here are the ACAC meetin g minutes for March 18, 2011.
ALL CITIZENS ACCESS COMMITTEE
Meeting Minutes for March 18, 2011
Meeting began at 2:10pm.
Members present: Jean Sears, Christine Glasheen, Robert Steinmann and Maureen
Steinmann.
Members absent: Brian Ladley and Denise Rego.
There were no changes to the meeting minutes for the November 19, 2010 and January
21,2011 meetings.
The minutes for both these meetings were approved and accepted.
All meeting minutes and agendas now will be shared with other handicap committees in
Barnstable, Bourne, Chatham, Dennis, Eastham, Falmouth, Harwich, Nantucket,
Sandwich,Truro and Wellfleet.
Review of the Open Meeting Law: one cannot communicate/vote/discuss any committee
business outside of an official meeting in any form either with a quorum of members or
with individual members that would amount to a quorum. Meeting notices must be
posted at least 48 business hours before the meeting and available to the public at all
times.
Nickerson State Park update: The Chair decided to contact the Dept. of Conservation
and Recreation directly rather than phone Superintendent Petersen. As a result,
Superintendent Petersen contacted the Chair saying that the ramp to the Visitors Center
at Nickerson State Park will be installed by the park's opening day, May 5th.
Town Hall update on making office counters accessible: Tom Thatcher is waiting to hear
from Victor Staley, Building Inspector, to see what work is immediately required. Tom
will be doing this work out of his budget and would like to sprIcad it out over time. Jean
suggested the use of accessible card tables as an alternative for some of the offices until
permanent modifications can be done. The committee agreed.
The Chair will get in touch with Tom.
Accessible Restaurants Listing: Denise had given this list to the Chamber of Commerce
to be published in their Brewster Guide Book. Denise and the Chair recommended that
the Chamber suggest to its members that they should indicate their accessibility status in
their ads. The Chamber will include in their book only the accessible restaurants that are
Chamber members; the ACAC list which will be available at the Visitors Center will
include all the restaurants and their accessibility status. We also asked the Chamber
when soliciting ads for their guide book to make sure that the restaurants understand

that they do not have to be members of the Chamber to be on the All Citizens Access Committee
accessible restaurant list.
Information sheets for Visitors Center and web site: These will include listings of accessible
beaches, beach wheelchair accessible beaches, accessible restaurants listing, accessible
recreational sites and info re the town's two beach wheelchairs. The information re beaches will
have to be updated due to beach erosion problems.
711 Telecommunication relay service: The Chair reviewed an info sheet from Verizon re TRS
and how it works with the assistance of a CA (communications assistant): voice to typeset,
speech to speech, video relay (VRS), and IP(internet provider) relay service. The committee
agreed technology is making life easier for people with disabilities.
Update on possible new beach wheelchair: As Denise was absent, nothing was discussed re this
except that possibly the money that the Friends of Brewster Elders were going to donate for this
new beach wheelchair might be better used and serve the needs of more people if it were used to
help fund a part time driver for the COA. This requested COA funding was removed from the
town budget due to budget constraints. This decision will rest with the COA and the Friends of
Brewster Elders.
The Chair mentioned "Nauset Neighbors," a new non-profit organization with its volunteers
serving the needs of seniors in Brewster, Orleans, Eastham and Wellfleet. More information
can be found by emailing info(a nausetneighbors.org or calling 508-514-7067. An information
meeting is to be held at Our Lady of the Cape on Friday, Mardi 25, at loam.
The Chair mentioned that she has put all the committee records and information that she has
into two large notebooks.
Christine announced that she and her husband, George, will be moving out of town. She will
send a letter to the Selectmen announcing her resignation as of June 1st.
Future projects: The only future project discussed was an accessible platform at Long Pond,
possibly involving assistance from Cape Cod Tech carpentry students.
Next meeting will be April 15, 2011. Meeting adjourned at 3:00pm.
Respectfully submitted by Maureen Steinmann.
