HomeMy Public PortalAboutBikeways Committee -- 2011-12-01 Minutes Brewster Bikeways Committee Friday, December 1st, 2011 Present: Bob Bersin, Jack Clarke , Andi Genser; Ike Scott. Guests: Sue Leven, Planning Department and Jim Foley, Selectman Jim reviewed the past and suggested that the town has not been as responsive to biking issues over the last 10 yers. Although the town has agreed to put in sidewalks where they can, this will require additional funds which the town does not have. Many plans are sitting on the shelf due to lack of funding. One avenue might be to think about how to incorporate biking projects into places, like the drainage projects that are funded--where the roads are getting ripped up to rework the drainage, perhaps there could be progress on a biking agenda in such situations. The town has a comprehensive plan from a ways back. Planning BOD is looking for people to serve on the sub committee (Local Comprehensiv Planning Board). Since things like alternative energy, biking for health; safe routes to school, etc are likely to be on the agenda. Even if we can't join the committee, we could attend and comment. Sue will be taking draft and sending out to other committees for comment. Note that you can always ask to be on the mailing list of a committee. Basic Advice from Susan and Jim: -Hold meetings at town hall -televise them on ch 18 (talk to James Paul Ludwig) -Use the public station to share info (e.g. PSA noticed that we are looking for members) -We need to create a broad base of support/interested residents so that more people might show up and support a biking agenda -We need to educate others to the things we are thinking about -Perhaps get a group riding down 137--shine a light on the problem by taking pictures and maybe getting a story in the Cape Codder -Work with the Chamber--and see how you can make it higher on their priority list (meet with Kyle?Jim would be willing to join us) -Consider a facebook page--biking in Brewster and link to other facebook pages -Consider the pedestrian issues as well; dovetail with them -Document the numbers of cyclists in key places during the season--eg. on 6a or at key points on the Rail Trail c._y---D
