The work session was called to order at Noon by Co-chair Lindsey Rowden.
Committee members present included Rudy Veit, Steve Duncan, Stephen Buchholz,
Julie Stotlemeyer, and Gart Pollard. Commissioners present included Andre Grinston,
Bill Plank, Lindsey Rowden, and Stu Murphy. Staff present included Mike Bollinger,
Julie Prenger, Leann Porrello, Missy Morarity, Angie Toebben, Kerri Gates, Amy Shaw,
and Aaron Grefrath.
Mike Bollinger’s Retirement
Lindsey Rowden congratulated Bollinger on his 27 years of service to the City and
thanked him for his service. Phil Stiles added that prior to Mike’s 27 years with the
City of Jefferson; he worked for the City of Columbia for 8 years. Stiles stated that Mike
Bollinger has done great things for Jefferson City with his involvement in the summer
camp programs, Friday Night Recreation and Special Olympics only to name a few.
Ice Arena Updates
Kerri Gates stated that the Ice Arena is quite busy. The biggest update is that Ice Arena
is happy to announce that new bleachers will be installed before the Ice Show. She
stated that new bleachers will help with assigned seating and with the raised seating; all
seats will have a great view. The bleachers will also have safety features and meet ADA
standards.
Kerri Gates also announced that with the first year of the Ice Arena being open year
round, it went well. She added that the Ice Arena staff is working to get camp and
program information out soon so that it will be included in the upcoming program
guide.
LINC Updates
Aaron Grefrath stated things are going good at the LINC. The boys’ basketball season
is wrapping up. Angie Toebben continued reporting on the boys and girls competitive
and recreational leagues for committee members.
Grefrath stated that memberships at the LINC continue to increase. The new cycling
equipment has arrived and been installed but training will take place in January.
Grefrath reported that the day passes continue to increase. Since March 1, 2017, 2,796
youth passes have been sold.
Summer Camp Changes/Updates
Grefrath reported that he, Phil Stiles and Mike Bollinger had met to discuss the summer
camp program and the upcoming season. Grefrath stated that as a part of our
Marketing Plan, High 5 Communications held focus group meetings and one thing that
rang clear was additional weeks of camps were needed, so staff will increase the
number of weeks. Also, the bus schedule that was previously offered throughout town
for the Binder Adventure Camp will be changed to have the LINC as a drop off location
for parents and the bus will depart from the LINC to Binder. Grefrath stated that after
camp swim will now be offered as a part of the camp cost.
Program Surveys
The program surveys that were sent by email were discussed. The committee stated
they had no additional questions.
Other Business
Staff reported to the committee that they are working to move all officials from
employees to contracted employees. Staff stated that the biggest issue now is trying to
build a larger pool of contract employees and finding assigners for all programs.
Adjournment
Being no other business, the Recreation Services Committee Work Session was
adjourned by Co-chair Lindsey Rowden at 12:32 p.m.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for March 20, 2018 – Noon at The Linc.
