HomeMy Public PortalAboutTOL PR 2013-08-14 Bus Service Public Input Sessions Town of Leesburg News Release For Immediate Release Two Public Input Sessions on Local Bus Service Planned for Wednesday, August 21, 2013 Leesburg, VA (August 14, 2013) – The Town of Leesburg will host two public input sessions regarding the local bus service on Wednesday, August 21, 2013. Part of a transit management analysis being conducted by Kimley-Horn and Associates for Loudoun County, the public input sessions are intended to gather feedback on the current operations of the four Leesburg bus routes, currently operated by Virginia Regional Transit. Those four routes include the Battlefield/Ida Lee route, the Leesburg Sycolin Road route, the Leesburg Trolley and the Safe-T- Ride. For details about the routes, including current bus stop locations and schedules, please see Virginia Regional Transit’s website at www.vatransit.org. The first session, which will begin at 8:30am, is aimed at local businesses, organizations and agencies whose clients, customers and employees may rely upon the bus service to get to their locations or facilities. The second session, which will begin at 3:00pm, is aimed at current riders of the local bus service. Both public input sessions will be held in the lower level of the Leesburg Town Hall (25 West Market Street, Leesburg). In late 2012, the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) informed Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg that the local bus routes in eastern Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg were no longer eligible for funding under the federal Rural Transit Program, based on 2010 U.S. Census data regarding population densities. The current federal funding for the local bus service expires on September 30, 2013. In order to assist Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg with the transition away from funding under the Rural Transit Program, DRPT agreed to fund the transit management analysis, which is currently under way by Kimley-Horn and Associates.
