HomeMy Public PortalAbout02-15-11 - K-8 School Workshop.tifMINUTES K-8 SCHOOL WORKSHOP KEY BISCAYNE, FLORIDA TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 15, 2011 COUNCIL CHAMBER 560 CRANDON BOULEVARD The meeting was called to order by the Mayor at 6:10 p.m. Present were Councilmembers Michael W. Davey, Enrique Garcia, Mayra P. Lindsay, James S. Taintor, Vice Mayor Michael E. Kelly and Mayor Franklin H. Caplan. Councilmember Robert Gusman was absent. Also present were Village Manager Genaro "Chip" Iglesias, Village Clerk Conchita H. Alvarez and Village Attorney Chad Friedman. Councilmember Robert Gusman was absent. The Manager introduced the following special guests: Mr. Albert Payne, Administrative Director, Region III, Miami -Dade County Public Schools, Mrs. Silvia Tarafa, K.B. Elementary School Principal, Ms. Ana Rijo-Conde, Facilities Planning Officer, Miami -Dade County Public Schools, Ms. Lubby Navarro, Director, Office of Intergovernmental Affairs, Grants Administration, and Community Engagement, Miami -Dade County Schools and Ms. Silvia R. Rojas, Treasurer, Office of Treasury Management, Miami -Dade County Schools. The Key Biscayne K-8 Education Advisory Board was appointed by the Mayor on August 26, 2009. The Board has met 16 times over the last year and on January 3, 2011 through a unanimous vote of the current four active members makes the following recommendations to the Council: 1.) Develop an Education Compact with Miami -Dade County Schools with primary areas of concentration that are outlined in Appendix A (attached for the record); 2.) Include in the Compact as secondary areas of concentration recommendations outlined in Appendix B (attached for the record) to be 1 oft February 15, 2010 continuously monitored and measure to enhance the learning experience and provide benefit to the K-8 students; 3.) Establish a process to develop and approve the Compact prior to the start of the 2011 school year. Mr. Charles Viscito and Ms. Brett Graff, K-8 Education Advisory Board Members made a presentation to Council. Manny Cambo, 621 Harbor Drive; Julie Dick, 251 Crandon Boulevard and Liz AriLulendi, 881 Harbor Drive addressed the Council. It was the consensus of Council to direct the Manager to get details on several of the ideas presented this evening. Once that information is presented to the Council, the Manager may receive direction to enter into formal negotiations with the School Board.
