Woodland, District D Councilor Watertown Town Council Administration Building 149 Main Street Watertown, MA 02472 Phone: 617-972-6470 Committee on Economic Development and Planning Meeting January 29, 2018 Report: February 13, 2018 The Committee convened at 6:00 pm on Monday, January 29, 2018 in the Louis P. Andrews Upper Conference Room. Present were Kenneth Woodland, chair; Lisa Feltner, vice chair; and Vincent Piccirilli, secretary. The purpose of the meeting was to interview candidates for appointment and reappointment to the Historic District Commission. Petr Kuzmic is a chemist who works as a consultant in the pharmaceutical industry. Being a member of the Historical Society of Watertown, and having bought an older home in the District, he is seeking appointment because he is interested in maintaining the historic look of the neighborhood while performing energy efficient upgrades to homes for modern living. Elizabeth Hayes is a real estate broker, an attorney, and a former secretary for the Harwich Historic Commission and the Harwich Planning Board. She is seeking appointment as the Realtor appointee, because of her interest and experience with historic architecture, and her belief that Watertown's commitment to historic preservation makes it a vibrant place to live. Lauren Soelch is a construction project manager for athenahealth who lives in the District. With an educational background in both architecture and construction management, she is seeking appointment because of her interest in the history of buildings, and comparing past building methods and how they perform today. Linda Sternberg is an attorney who lives in the District and has served on the Commission since its creation in 2003, and is seeking reappointment. She wants to move forward with plans to install signs on Mt Auburn St identifying the District. Harvey Steiner is an artist who lives in the District and has served on the Commission since its creation in 2003, and is seeking reappointment. He has served as Chair for all but one year. He has worked with both the Planning Department and the DPW to design the signs identifying the District, and hopes they can proceed soon with installation. Jonathan Merin is an architect, for appointment as the AIA appointee. While he works primarily in commercial design, he is interested in historic preservation and loves how period architecture defines a sense of place and community. He understands how pride in a community is related to the welcoming nature of streetscapes. The Committee thanked each new member and returning member for volunteering their time and talents to serve the citizens of Watertown. Voted 3-0 4 Action Item: Councilor Piccirilli made a motion, seconded by Councilor Feltner, to recommend the Town Council confirm Elizabeth Hayes for Appointment to the Historic District Commission as the Realtor appointee, for a Term that Expires on November 15, 2020. Voted 3-0 4 Action Item: Councilor Piccirilli made a motion, seconded by Councilor Feltner, to recommend the Town Council confirm Lauren Soelch for Appointment to the Historic District Commission as a Resident appointee, for a Term that Expires on November 15, 2018. Voted 3-0 4 Action Item: Councilor Piccirilli made a motion, seconded by Councilor Feltner, to recommend the Town Council confirm Linda Sternberg for Reappointment to the Historic District Commission as a Resident appointee, for a Term that Expires on November 15, 2019. Voted 3-0 4 Action Item: Councilor Piccirilli made a motion, seconded by Councilor Feltner, to recommend the Town Council confirm Harvey Steiner for Reappointment to the Historic District Commission as a Resident appointee, for a Term that Expires on November 15, 2019. Voted 3-0 4 Action Item: Councilor Piccirilli made a motion, seconded by Councilor Feltner, to recommend the Town Council confirm Jonathan Merin for Appointment to the Historic District Commission as the AIA appointee, for a Term that Expires on November 15, 2020. Voted 3-0 The Committee requested that the Administration promptly update the Historic District Commission's website to reflect the terms of current appointees. The meeting adjourned at 7:05 pm.
