Please note that the following assumes that the structure is the one evaluated in the report as it pertains to aluminum extrusion sizes, bracing, reinforcement and details etc. Specifically I will review the 3.5 meter eave structure. My response should not be taken as a certification of the tent but rather as an interpretation of the table and is for information purposes only. Per FTL's report I have determined that the tent is expected to withstand a 69 mph wind safely. The report rates the structure for 90 mph ( 3 second gust) Exposure C with a return period of 5 years for 7.8 psf at a mean roof elevation of 17 feet. I believe the return period of 5 years is a typo and should read "2 years." The 7.8 psf at 17 feet rating equates to approximately 69 mph. This 69 mph is regardless of wether the structure is near a large body of water, in an open field or deep inside a dense forest as it pertains to the actual allowable strength of frame to resist a very local wind speed. Obviously the chance of 69 mph occurring suddenly near an open body of water is more likely than a 69 mph local wind speed deep inside a dense forest so it would be even more advisable that the local wind conditions be monitored and should wind gusts of 50 to 55 mph or more be predicted or expected then the tent should be evacuated. The specifications outlined in the Structural Engineering Institute/American Society of Civil Engineers (SEI/ASCE 7-02): "Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures"were followed in determining the integrity of the structure. This document is intended to serve as a basis for the acceptability of this temporary, stand-alone, enclosed structure under standard design wind loads at varying levels of exposure (terrain and wind velocities). Tables 0-1 and 0-2 present the wind pressures (loads) under which the 20 meter frame was evaluated. The standard frame spacing is 5m(16.4ft)on center. FTL Design Engineering Studio compiled this report based on the existing tent system with reference to the applicable building codes in the U.S. This report includes the loading used in the analysis and gives an indication as to what wind exposure the structure is suitable for. Certification of this document only shows that the Professional Engineer of that particular state is in agreement with the report's contents. It does not, however, imply that the structure is generally suitable for use within that state,or that every installation is covered by the report. Computer-aided structural frame analyses were involved in the course of the investigation. Different load combinations were considered to identify the critical aspects of the design. Member and detail checks were established to derive the conclusions for the entire report. With such, FTL arrived at the following conclusions and recommendations: 1. Wind Speed Rating Wind Speed: 90 mph(3-second gust) Exposure: Class C(open country or terrain) Return Period: 5 years Basic Pressure Including Gust Factors: 7.8 psf @ 17'mean height(3.5m eave) 7.9 psf @ 18'mean height(4.0m eave) It has been found that for the above mentioned wind speed, exposure class, and return period (or mean recurrence interval, MRI), the structure satisfies the requirements of the "American Society of Civil Engineers: Minimum Design Loads for Buildings and Other Structures" (ASCE 7-02). In addition, for the above wind speed and exposure class, the structure is also in accordance with the following building codes in the U.S.: • International Building Code(IBC) • Building Officials and Code Administrators(BOCA) • Uniform Building Code(UBC) • Southern Building Code Congress Int'l: Standard Building Code (SBCCI-SBC) 2. Allowable Hanging Loads on Frames Hanging loads have been assumed to be 250 lbs at the center of each rafter and 500 lbs at the ridge. 3. Base Reactions The frames should be anchored securely to the ground to prevent the possibility of uplift in the event of wind suction. The figures given are per base plate. • Max.Vertical Uplift: 1.4 kips(Class C,90 mph,3.5m eave) 1.5 kips(Class C,90 mph,4.0m eave) • Max.Shear(parallel to frame): 2.0 kips(Class C,90 mph,3.5m eave) 2.2 kips(Class C,90 mph,4.0m eave) • Max.Vertical Download: 1.2 kips(Class C,90 mph,3.5m eave) 1.2 kips(Class C,90 mph,4.0m eave) Note: Base reactions for frames at wall-braced bays shall include the following additional forces: • Additional Vertical Uplift or Download: 1.7 kips(Class C,90 mph,3.5m eave) 2.1 kips(Class C,90 mph,4.0m eave) • Additional Shear(perpendicular to frame): 1.7 kips(Class C,90 mph,3.5m eave) 1.9 kips(Class C,90 mph,4.0m eave) 4. Installation Requirements It is understood that the responsibility of proper installation according to the plans rests upon the installation contractor. This includes, but is not limited to,ensuring the following: • that the cables are always held taut • that the fabric is stretched tight enough to prevent the development of pockets and to maintain the prescribed roof gradient • that the purlins be installed securely against the rafters so as to resist the calculated loads • the structure should be set on firm and unyielding ground. This ground should sufficiently contain the bearing pressures of the base plates as well as the tractive forces of the rod anchors • that all base plates are secured to their foundations using each of the provided anchor holes (i.e. a six-holed base plate would require six anchor bolts or stakes). 5. Additional Requirements • The 4.0 meter eave height structure requires steel knee braces at the eave joints of each frame. • Both the 3.5 meter eave height and the 4.0 meter eave height structures require steel braces at the ridge joint of each frame. Additional Exposure and Wind Speed Combinations: The 20 meter Roder Frame Tent is suitable for up to a Class C,90 mph wind exposure. For other exposures and wind speed combinations, refer to the following tables, where the stricken values are the unsuitable pressures for the structure.
