HomeMy Public PortalAbout510.1 - Police Department - Police Chief - Organization and PolicyPolice Department Chief Section 510.1 510.1 SUBJECT: ORGANIZATION AND POLICY :1 OBJECTIVE: Preservation of the peace; prevention of crime and disorder; protection of life, property and individual freedoms; apprehension of crime perpetrators. :2 AUTHORITY: This procedure amended by City Council January 8, 1996, Item 4 CCC. :3 DIRECTION: Police Chief, as an appointed official, serves at the pleasure of, and receives direction from the Mayor or the Mayor’s designee. :4 FUNCTIONS: A. Enforces the ordinances and laws of the City of Orlando, Florida; enforces the laws of the State of Florida; and upholds the laws of the United States of America. B. Prevents crime, preserves peace and order, protects life and property and inhibits criminal activity. C. Identifies and apprehends crime perpetrators, collects and analyzes evidence for submission to the court. D. Effects crowd control; directs traffic and enforces traffic laws; investigates accidents. E. Maintains liaison with local, state and national law enforcement agencies; exchanges information for aiding in the apprehension of criminals. F. Investigates incidents involving civil disobedience, subversive groups, and labor disputes, and suppresses illegal demonstrations and disorders. G. Develops, analyzes, and issues summaries of crime and traffic enforcement data and information concerning police activities. Maintains police records. H. Operates police communication system. I. Conducts studies concerned with police and community relations; designs, coordinates and presents programs conducive to improving police/community/youth relations. J. Administers and manages police personnel; has the authority and responsibility for the fiscal management of the police department; plans for future law enforcement needs. K. Provides a depository and maintains accountability for articles of evidence seized as a result of criminal activity, and for other property that may be seized, lost, or abandoned. Also provides for the proper disposition of such property and evidence. :5 FORMS: None.
