A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF McCALL, IDAHO,
EXPRESSING THE CITY' S STRONG CONCERN THAT THE McCALL AREA POST
OFFICE REMAIN AT A LOCATION IN OR ADJACENT TO THE CENTRAL
BUSINESS DISTRICT IN THE ZONING MAP OF McCALL.
WHEREAS:
1. The City has a community land use planning obligation and program;
2. The City's Planning and Zoning Commission has adopted a downtown plan
which calls for the location of the post office in the central business district;
3. In a small town such as this one the post office serves an important function of
facilitating interaction among citizens and promotes the economic health of the
central area; and
4. Location of the Post Office outside of the downtown would threaten deterioration
to the downtown area;
BE IT RESOLVED by the Mayor and Council of the City of McCall that:
Section 1. The City of McCall respectfully requests the United States Postal Service to
locate a new post office in or adjacent to the Central Business District; of the sites
known to us, notwithstanding the refusal of the Postal Service to disclose what
sites were offered to them, our first choice would be the so-called Smith Site
directly behind City Hall and the Library. A second choice site would be the so-
called Hehr site south of Hemlock Street, although the latter would damage the
ability of the City to finance Urban Renewal improvements.
Section 2. Staff is directed to take such steps as may be necessarily forcefully to bring
this resolution to the attention of relevant public authority, and to determine what
other similarly affected cities and towns there may be. Staff is also directed to
consider what steps the City might be able to take to facilitate use of either of
those two downtown sites.
Section 3. The City Attorney is directed to explore fully the legal remedies which are or
may be available for the City.
Passed and approved January 23, 1997.
