Timber Truss Design Review—Church Set
Dear Sirs:
Per your request Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co. has reviewed the design details for
the timber truss system for the church building set to be used during the filming of the movie
"The Last Song" on Tybee Island. Our review consisted of the evaluation of the design plans
prepared by the architectural design and production staff for the film and our analysis of the truss
components and anticipated load conditions.
It is our understanding the following criteria is the basis of the design and our review:
1. The church set incorporating the truss system is a temporary uninhabitable
construction solely for the purposes of creating specific scenes for the movie. No
permanent occupancy of the structure is to be made. At the end of the filming the
set will be dismantled. Other than the loads generated by the frame's self weight,
and the wind load specified there are no other loads being applied on the truss
with the exception of light fixtures to be used during the filming operations.
2. There is no permitting submittal or application activity involved based on your
discussions and agreements with the municipalities. Due to the temporary nature
and use of the structure adherence to the loading requirements of the International
Building Code is not required
3. The design wind speed is to be no greater 90 mph
According to the drawings provided the truss system is comprised of 2 x 6 timber rafters
at 16 inches on center and a glu-laminated timber arch centered in the truss all supported by
heavy 4 x 6 timber beams and posts including timber support brackets at each truss. The trusses
are spaced approximately 9 feet on center. The roof system will consist of metal roofing and
plywood decking. We also understand that the trusses will be securely strapped to the support
columns and also down to the foundations.

Based on our review and our structural analysis of the truss components as detailed on
the plan and our understanding of the proposed uses, it is our opinion the truss system as
designed is adequate to support the intended loads.

proposed activities, and our experience with similar structures.

Asbestos/Environmental Notification to Georgia EPD for
Projects Involving Demolition, Wrecking, or Renovation
The undersigned hereby acknowledges that the issuance of this permit does not in any way grant
permission to the owner, owner's representative, or permit holder to proceed with demolition,
wrecking, or renovation of a structure prior to the filing of any required ten (10) day "Project
Notification for Asbestos Renovation Encapsulation or Demolition" form in accordance with
the Georgia Asbestos Rules. The Georgia Environmental Protection Division administers the
rules. In most cases, the rules require both the owner and the involved contractors to assure the
portion of the building involved in the project is thoroughly inspected by an Accredited Asbestos
Inspector for materials that contain asbestos; and the removal of the asbestos before renovation,
wrecking, or demolition begins almost without exemption. Georgia EPD requires a completed
demolition notification from be submitted 10 workings days in advance even if no asbestos is
present in the building. Further guidance for regulatory compliance and contact telephone
numbers are provided by the brochures entitled Asbestos & Renovation and Asbestos and
Demolition. Other environmental issues such as asbestos removal techniques, lead abatement,
ground contamination, or unusual site conditions may have EPD regulations that could affect the
project.

In addition to specific requirements for the above permits and approvals, applicants must
demonstrate that they are in compliance with the City of Tybee Island Storm Water Management
requirements as outlined in Chapter 5-4, Code of Ordinances.
Section 5-4-9 Prohibition provides, in part, as follows:
(4.) It is unlawful for any person to cause or permit any storm water to flow from their
property onto the property of another person, unless such storm water naturally
flowed thereon prior to any development activity.
(5.) It is unlawful for any person to interrupt the flow of any storm water runoff from
adjacent property onto their property by any development activity.
As part of the City's approval process applicants must illustrate how these storm water
management prohibitions will be met, including a showing of how storm water naturally flowed
on the affected property(prior to any development activity), and what changes in storm water
flow have occurred or are expected to occur, as attachments to this form. The City's approval or
permit does not guarantee that the applicant's plans will result in meeting requirements. The final
product must actually meet the City Ordinance requirements.

The construction of our Church set on Tybee Island will consist of all the normal
practices and principles of residential and light commercial construction with special attention to
the nature of coastline construction. Our roof/truss design will be approved by Mr. Charles
George, P.E. with the Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co. The main single story structure will be
approximately 55'x 29' with a small foyer and alcove with a combined square footage of
approximately 1650 sq. ft. There will be an adjoining two story bell tower. Our trusses will be
strapped and cabled down through the 2"x6" framed walls, the 2"X10" floor system and directly
strapped to the 8"x8" wooden post piers which will be set below grade in concrete. The finished
floor system should only be 18"to 20" above grade. All of our exterior cladding although it hasn't
been chosen, will be a typical lapboard type found on numerous Tybee buildings. Our roof will
be a tin roof.
In addition, we will have a dumpster on site for our construction debris as well as a tool
trailer for storage, which will be removed during filming. During the construction process, we will
have security at night and on the weekends when no work is taking place.
In case of an approaching hurricane, Piano Productions emergency plan will consist of
the following procedure. We will be in constant communication with the Tybee Island emergency
management officials. If a storm seems eminent the production will board up all of the windows
and doors of our building. We will remove all associated equipment on the property and will add
some additional cabling and tie downs across the roof as an added precaution. Under these
circumstances we feel that our structure will be able to withstand the storm winds and rain as
well as many of the structures on the island.
Once filming is completed and the production is satisfied with the filming of the church, it
is our intention to hire a licensed demolition contractor to remove our building/set and return the
lot to its original condition.
