A total of $22.9 million was granted to localities across the Commonwealth. The projects for which Leesburg received the funding include stream restoration along Tuscarora Creek and stormwater detention pond improvements. The Tuscarora Creek project is in the current Capital Improvements Program (CIP), with an expected construction start in Summer 2015. The Town received $641,075 in grant funding for Tuscarora Creek. The remaining $963,088 in grant funding will be used to retrofit existing stormwater detention ponds throughout the Town to meet new, stricter water quality standards. The pond retrofits are included in the current CIP as part of an overall stormwater compliance program, but individual projects are not listed or prioritized. The focus of all these projects is to reduce levels of phosphorus and other pollutants that enter Goose Creek, the Potomac River and, ultimately, the Chesapeake Bay from the Town’s storm sewer system. The Town will receive the grant funding on a reimbursement basis, after the projects have been completed. The grants do require that the Town match the grant funding with local funding. The grant-funded projects are expected to be spread out over the next three or four years, according to Capital Projects Director Renée LaFollette. “What a great way to end the year,” said John Wells, Leesburg’s Town Manager. “Charlie Mumaw, our Deputy Director of Public Works, oversees our stormwater compliance program. He did a great job in preparing the grant application. We never expected to receive funding for every project submitted, so kudos to Charlie, and our Capital Projects team, for identifying these projects and requesting the funding.” Contact: Betsy Fields Research & Communications Manager bfields@leesburgva.gov 703-771-2734 # # #
