May 16, 2013 l' kw, Lici a., Brewster Town Hall i Present for tlommittee: Chair Telman, Donna Kalinick,Brenda Cazeault Present for tldministration: Dr. Hoffmann, Dr. Caretti, Ms.Venditti, Principal Fronius and Principal Gauley Others: Greg—evasseur Call to Order Chair Telman called the meeting to order at 7:02 p.m. Agenda Changes None Recognitions Superintendent Hoffmann took a moment to recognize Mara Liebling,retiring school committee member. The following was read into the minutes: "Mara was elected to the school committee in 2010 and has served her three year term advocating for continued academic excellence in education for the children of Brewster. She has been a constant supporter of the staff and Administration providing thoughtful consideration and insight on various topics,always with the best interest of children in mind. She has been the school committee representative to the Eddy School Council and has worked collaboratively with members to present a very thorough School Improvement Plan focusing on academic outcomes, school climate and community involvement. She worked hard to help pass an override when the schools were in jeopardy of losing important programs for our students. She spent a year and a half working on the District Health and Wellness Subcommittee revising the Nauset Wellness Policy and raised the awareness of the importance of physical activity and good nutrition for our children. Please join me in thanking Mara for all that she has done for our schools, our students,and the entire Brewster community." Citizens Speak None PRK)RTY BUSINESS Principals Reports Principal Fronius introduced K.T. Stone who thanked Chair Telman, Sue Ballentine and Greg Levasseur for bringing the First Tee golf program to Brewster. She indicated that the program has been very successful in Grades 1 and 2 and showed a video of students participating, using the proper terminology and demonstrating safety techniques as they played the game. It was noted a survey was conducted and out of 129 students, 95 students liked golf and 34 students did not like the game because they like to run at gym. Chair Telman once again thanked the Cape Cod National Golf Course as well as the Captains Golf Course affiliates for their generous donations to make this happen for the children of Brewster. Principal Fronius congratulated Educational Assistant, Sue Ford, for being honored as one of Nauset's Employees of the Year! She also reported that the Kindergarten registration figure is at 78 students. She is in the process of hiring a kindergarten teacher and the search committee has been formed that includes a classroom teacher, a special needs teacher,a parent, and a member of the school council. Interviews will take place on May 30t. Principal Fronius indicated she may be able to use an educational assistant in the school to assist in that classroom. She also noted that Principal Gauley sent a letter to all the Eddy School parents and parents of second grade students at Stony Brook letting them know he would not be their principal next year. BSC Minutes 5-16-2013 Wage Principal Gauley reported that Perry Andac,Grade 3 Teacher,was honored as Elementary Teacher of the Year for the Nauset District! He also reported that Arts Night is June 13th from 5:30-730 p.m. and he invited parents and . residents of Brewster to attend. Dr. Caretti indicated that Preschool is moving along with their reorganization which includes two extended day programs. Dr.Bonny Gifford could not attend the meeting as she was at a function honoring an elementary school teacher from Orleans. Her report was included in the packet. Dr.Hoffmann thanked the citizens of Brewster for voting the budgets and security articles at town meeting. He also indicated that all budgets and capital requests passed in all four towns across the district. He reported that he is working with a search committee for the Eddy School principal. Members of the search committee include: Two teachers,two parents,two school committee members,Principal Fronius,Dr.Caretti and Dr. Hoffmann. He also reported that Nauset hosted visitors from Pakistan at the Brewster Schools and the High School which was very interesting and informative. He thanked Charlie Sumner for involving Nauset. He recently attended the "Celebration of Excellence"at Nauset Middle School where 8th grade students honored teachers that impacted their lives. Brewster Energy Commission Chair Ed Swiniarsky from the Brewster Energy Commission addressed the Committee regarding the savings if Stony Brook converted from oil to gas. He estimated at$35,000 savings per year on fuel costs. He noted that gas prices can be locked in for three years. The Committee indicated they would keep this information in mind and thanked Mr. Swiniarsky for bringing it to their attention. a School Committee Vacancy Chair Telman reviewed the process for filling the vacant seat on the School Committee. The position is an outside , ,,, appointment from the Selectmen with the recommendation from the School Committee. The vacancy will be advertised on the Town's website and in the newspaper. He asked if anyone is interested,to send a letter to Susan Broderick, Selectmen's Office, stating your interest and listing your qualifications. The School Committee will attend the Board of Selectmen's meeting to make their recommendation. ;'''. FY13 Budget Giovanna Venditti,Director of Finance and Operations,reviewed the balances in the FY13 budgets for Eddy and °- Stony Brook as well as the spending plans for both schools. It was noted that$5,000 will not be left in the rental account. (Ms.Venditti indicated she will move the money as soon as it becomes available) The cafeteria revolving accounts were reviewed. It was noted that a decrease in student enrollment at Eddy School is part of the reason why participation is down since last year Chair Telman suggested marketing this better to increase participation. } The Food Service Survey was mentioned and Dr. Hoffmann indicated that this is being reviewed. It was suggested that when the incoming kindergarten students come for their bus ride that the parents be given literature about the Food Service Program so that they can start thinking about participating. Principal Fronius commended Donna Drown, cafeteria manager, for increasing participation in the breakfast program ; with over 30 students participating every day. j� A Ms.Kalinick thanked Giovanna Venditti for all the information she provided to the School Committee as well as `' explanations of accounts which made it easier to go through the budget process. Principal Fronius indicated that they are still negotiating with the YMCA and will have answers by the next meeting. s She stated they are going to stay with the rental of the five classrooms. A letter was sent to Stony Brook parents regarding the security system that will be in place soon. BSC Minutes 5-16-2013 2 I P a g e '' kdi , Summer Meeting Dates 4100, The committee indicated no need for a meeting in July but would like to meet on August 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at which time they will have an update on the kindergarten, security,the roof project, capital items,the playground and decide on goals for next year. July 15d'and July 29th from 4:00—6:00 p.m. has been scheduled for Joint School Committee meetings with the topic of streamlining the Superintendent's evaluation on the agenda. Other Reports and Information Cape Cod Collaborative—no report Playground Subcommittee—Principal Gauley reported that Giovanna Venditti is reviewing the paperwork from the supplier in terms of equipment and installation. They are presently meeting with contractors and getting estimates for excavation. They are also checking with Lisa Souve regarding the Community Playground grant. Preschool Enrollment—Enrollment is at 76 students. It was indicated that$25,000 has been collected from preschool families who had balances in arrears. Building and Needs Assessment Committee—Chair Telman indicated that they will be meeting next week to review the window project slated for the summer.
