HomeMy Public PortalAboutOrd. 1454CITY OF LYNWOOD LOS ANGELES COUNTY, CALIFORNIA ORDINANCE NO. 1454 FOLLOWS: AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD MOVING THE DATE OF ITS GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTION FROM THE FIRST TUESDAY AFTER THE FIRST MONDAY IN NOVEMBER OF ODD-NUMBERED YEARS TO THE FIRST TUESDAY AFTER THE FIRST MONDAY IN NOVEMBER OF EACH EVEN-NUMBERED YEAR, PURSUANT TO GOVERNMENT CODE SECTION 36503.5 THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF LYNWOOD DOES ORDAIN AS Section 1. Findings. A. The City's next general municipal election is scheduled for the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November 1997, which is the date of November 4, 1997. B. Government Code Section 36503.5 authorizes the City Council, by ordinance, to reschedule its general municipal election on the same day as the statewide general election, as set forth in Section 1302 of the Elections Code. C. Rescheduling the date of the City's general municipal election in accordance with this ordinance will increase the terms of office of incumbent Members of the City Council by a period of approximately twelve months. Section 2. In accordance with Section 36503.3 of the California Government Code, the date of the general municipal election of the City of Lynwood is moved from the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each odd-numbered year to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November of each even-numbered year. Consequently, the general municipal election of the City of Lynwood will be .held on the same day as the statewide general election, commencing in 1998. Section 3. In accordance with Section 36503.5 (g) of the California Government Code, the newly established date for holding general municipal elections in the City of Lynwood may not be changed until at least one election has been held on the newly established date. Section 4. In accordance with Section 36503.5(a)(1) of the California Government Code, this ordinance will become operative upon the approval of the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County. Section 5. In accordance with Section 36503.5 (e) of the California Government Code, the City Clerk, acting as the City's elections official, is directed to cause a notice to be mailed to all registered voters informing the voters of the change in election date. This notice must also inform the voters ,that, as a result of the change in the election date, the terms of office of the elected City officeholders will be changed. The City Clerk will cause this notice to be mailed within thirty (30) days after this ordinance becomes operative by virtue of its approval by the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County. Section 6. In accordance with Section 36937 (a) of the California Government Code, this ordinance relating to an election takes effect immediately upon its adoption. Section 7. The City Clerk is directed to certify to the passage and adoption of this ordinance, to cause it to be 970421 10512-00001 syc 0593007 0 published or posted according to law, and to submit it to the Board of Supervisors of Los Angeles County for approval.
