Stem In Action
Dr. Bonny Gifford introduced Roger Faucher, Robotics Teacher at Nauset High School and Maggie
Brown, Science Teacher at Eastham Elementary School as presenters for the science program. She
also indicated that the robotics program is now in the fourth grade and Mr. Faucher is working with
Middle School teachers at this time.
Mr. Faucher gave a PowerPoint presentation regarding STEM Skills for 21St Century Learners that
included his background, the vision for Nauset, the Robotics proposal, MIT STEM boot camp,
teaching STEM with Robotics, Atlas Curriculum Mapping, various software programs, and showcased
some robots made Nauset High School students.
Ms. Brown presented several robotic creature models that were developed by students in Grade K—5.
All students are working on programming and incorporating writing into their science curriculum by
writing a story about their creature.
Mr. Faucher concluded the presentation by stating how good it was to have teachers at the high school,
middle school an elementary schools working together on this program.

Flipped Classroom
Kathleen Tringale, Science Teacher(Intro to Physics) at the High School, gave a Power Point
presentation on the"Flipped Classroom." Her goal was to free up class time to problem solve rather
than lecture and have students take notes. She also wanted her students to troubleshoot problems
together following the appropriate steps. She posts her teacher's notes on the website for students to
review.
At home students listen to and take notes at their own pace while listening to a video lecture.
Textbooks can be accessed for additional support and students may be directed to additional support
material. The benefits of flipping is that it allows for more"differentiated" instruction, there is a
greater student-teacher and student-student interaction in the classroom,pre-lecture notes allow for
being able to engage in meaningful dialog in the classroom, time for more individualized instruction,
absent students are able to access information and family members become more knowledgeable about
what is being learned.
She indicated that it takes a great deal of time to teach this way, that it is not for everyone, and it is not
for every subject matter. She surveyed her students with some liking it and some wanting to go back
to lecture and note-taking. She is very excited about what she is seeing in the classroom.
