Not letting a little rain get them down, volunteers from the City, Riverdale Heights Elementary, and Quercus Land Stewardship planted trees on both school and city property on Earth Day, Friday, April 22, 2022. Funding for this event came from a Trees for Kids grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (sponsored by Iowa Woodland Owners Association, Iowa Tree Farm Committee, Trees Forever, and Iowa Bankers Association), a Trees Please! grant from MidAmerican Energy Company, the City of Riverdale, Iowa, and from generous in-kind donations from Quercus Land Stewardship Services, LLC, and volunteers like you! Many trees replaced those lost in the 2020 derecho storm. 9 trees were planted at Riverdale Heights Elementary School, 23 trees were planted on city property, and each student at Riverdale Heights took home a tree to plant in their own yard! 8 - Mother's Day 11 - National Eat What You Want Day 15 - National EMS Week 20 - National Bike to Work/School Day 29 - Learn About Composting Day 30 - Memorial Day May is Military Appreciation month! Canadian Pacific Rail will be raising all of the tracks and crossings from Davenport to Clinton in an effort to increase track integrity; while not related to flooding, one benefit will be better drainage. Based on age, some crossings will be replaced. CP anticipates reaching the Riverdale section late June/early July. Expect some daytime and overnight noise/ inconvenience/delays; however, they should be minimal, as CP can replace approximately 2 miles of track per day. We'll let you know more as we learn more! Welcome Maintenance Worker Sam Hollars Sam and his family reside in Milan, IL, on a small acreage where he and his wife Kayla enjoy gardening, with a focus on perennial food crops and flowers. They have two wonderful sons, ages 19 and 14, and they all enjoy hiking, camping, and just generally being outdoors. Sam has a wide range of experience across multiple types of industries, including industrial and building maintenance, as well as groundskeeping. In addition to his new role with the City, he also provides maintenance services for the Animal Emergency Center just down the road on State Street, which he enjoys very much. When not working the gardens or spending family time outdoors, Sam enjoys repairing old garden tractors, cooking and meal planning, and learning what he can to add value to himself, others, and the community. Sam very much looks forward to getting to know Riverdale and its residents and to helping however he can. If you see Sam out and about, please extend a warm welcome! Local agencies are recommending the temporary removal of bird feeders and bird baths in an effort to slow down the spread of disease!
