The Cemetery Resources Board met on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. in the Thomas
Jefferson Room, lower level of the John G. Christy Municipal Building, 320 E. McCarty Street, Jefferson
City, Missouri.
Approval of the Minutes:
A motion was made for approval of the minutes from the October 18, 2018 meeting by Nancy
Thompson, Jeanne Rutledge seconded. Minutes were approved.
Old Business:
Cemetery Preservation Workshop- Nancy Thompson reported the date will be set after the first of the
year for the workshop. Amanda Burke with the Department of Natural Resources will be in charge of
the event.
Cemetery Veteran Gravestones- Nancy reported that four of the Veteran gravestones have been set by
Capital Monuments. Nancy discussed she had applied for an additional two Veteran gravestones from
the Office of Veterans Administration. Michele Brooks had completed research on one of the
individuals that Nancy had made application for.
2
Discussion occurred between Board Members regarding the number of Veteran gravestones left that
had to be purchased. Nancy stated Capital Monument Company has provided a price of $750.00 per
gravestone that would match the gravestones provided by the Federal Government. The total cost to
purchase and set the remaining Veteran stones are $5250.00. The Cemetery Resources Board
discussed possible funding options for these gravestones. Nancy mentioned she had discussed the
project with Don Hentges, Jefferson City Veterans Council, and Lincoln University for possible funding
sources. Nancy would like a dedication to be done when the stones are set.
Gone but Not Forgotten Memorial- Board Members discussed the Gone but Not Forgotten Monument
in Old City Cemetery. Donations received will be used to fund placing names on the monument when
the contractor is able to do so. Discussion occurred about how difficult it was for the contractor to get
back to the location to place the names on the monument with his equipment.
Donation of Flag Pole- David Grellner gave an update on the flag pole donation by Mr. James Ludy in
Longview Cemetery. Paperwork has been completed and American Heritage Company from St. Louis,
Missouri will be the installers of the flagpole. The project hopefully will be completed by the end of the
year.
Tablet Gravestones- Nancy discussed the tablet gravestones and how small granite markers will be
placed at the head of the tablet gravestones to preserve information about who is buried there. Fixing
the tablet gravestones is cost prohibitive at this time.
New Business:
David Grellner discussed the new ordinance passed by City Council this past month regarding electronic
participation in City of Jefferson Boards and Commission Meetings. The ordinance describes members
of certain boards can participate electronically during meetings if they cannot attend. The Cemetery
Resources Board is included in being able to attend electronically. The member would have to give 48
hours' notice previous to the meeting to be considered as a quorum member to participate by electronic
means.
Other Topics and Issues:
The next Cemetery Resources Board meeting was set for Thursday, January 17, 2019 at 10:00 a.m. in the
Thomas Jefferson Conference Room at City Hall.
Adjournment:
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned.
Respectfully submitted,
David Grellner
