Updated FEMA Flood Map for Loudoun County Available
for Review
Community open houses scheduled for September
Leesburg, VA (August 27, 2014) – The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recently
provided Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg with a preliminary new version of the
Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) for the County. The FIRM is used by insurance companies to
determine flood insurance rates for buildings and their contents.
Residents whose properties are in or near a floodplain are encouraged to attend one of three
community open houses to learn more about the preliminary map and how their properties
may be affected. The schedule for the community open houses is:
• Monday, September 8, 2014, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Tuscarora High School, 801
North King Street, Leesburg
• Friday, September 19, 2014, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Cascades Senior Center, 21060
Whitfield Place, Sterling
• Tuesday, September 23, 2014, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Woodgrove High School,
36811 Allder School Road, Purcellville
Anyone who requires a reasonable accommodation in order to participate in the meetings may
call the county’s Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator at 571-258-3282 (TTY 711). Three
days’ notice is requested.
Representatives from Loudoun County and the Town of Leesburg will be at the community
open houses to help residents locate their properties on the Preliminary FIRM and to explain
their flood risk and the National Flood Insurance Program. Accurate Flood Insurance Rate Maps,
commonly called “floodplain maps,” are a fundamental component of the National Flood
Insurance Program. For communities such as Loudoun County that participate in this program,
federally-backed flood insurance is available to homeowners, renters, and business owners as a
protection against flood loss.
