PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this
year as part of a series of proclamations.
WHEREAS, July 4th holds a particularly special place in the history of our Nation as well as that of our City.
WHEREAS, on July 4th, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence thus
establishing our great Nation.
WHEREAS, on July 4t",1803, the Louisiana Purchase, including those lands which now include Riverdale, was
officially known to be agreed upon by treaty as a US possession after word from their negotiations reached
Washington, DC and was officially announced to the public. It would eventually be ratified in October of that year.
WHEREAS, on July 4th, 1805, the Louisiana Territory, including those lands which now include Riverdale, was
created by an act of Congress which formalized the lands acquired by the Louisiana Purchase a year prior.
WHEREAS, on July 4th, 1838, the Iowa Territory, including those lands which now include Riverdale, was created
by Congress, thus bringing Iowa as the official home of Riverdale for the first time.
WHEREAS, the Louisiana Territory, led from City of St. Louis, was at least the 12th iteration of European and
American ownership of the City of Riverdale.
WHEREAS, the Iowa Territory, led from City of Burlington (18384840) and Iowa City (1841-1846), was at least the
22"d iteration of European and American ownership of the City of Riverdale.
THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby proclaim
that July 4th as

In Riverdale, and encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our
region and those who first help establish our community.
