Sue and Mary, yours are the only e-mails 1 have for members of this committee. Please forward this to the other members. Thank you! Hi All, Many thanks for your diligent work pulling together our survey questions and organizing our survey. My understanding is that you are now at the point of reviewing pilot input, and settling on the final version for the questionnaire. It has been hard to get visibility into the details of what you are doing, but there are two major concerns I hope have been incorporated. It would be easy to focus on people's beach-going habits and desires for beach access, which are all important, but miss two key trade-offs that are critical parts of the article the Selectmen all supported at Town meeting. Those are the issues of the trade-offs between ease of beach access and the quality of the access experience and of beach road neighborhoods, also between the ease of getting onto the beach in the summer, and all the other access people seek year round. Here are the relevant highlights of the article: "To see if the Town will vote to advise the Board of Selectmen to use a community-based process in order to foster public engagement and input, conduct objective and collaborative inquiry, and develop a Comprehensive Brewster Beach Access Plan This plan would addresses all types of coastal access,!n all, seasons, with the;goals,of protect!ng natural reources, and„park, lariel and managing peak summer demand for parking while safely meeting the needs and wants of beach-goers of all ages, inclinations, and physical capabilities, along with those,of the neighborhoods, involue> ." If the survey does not address these, we could miss a major opportunity to get the most useful information to guide us. Please at least pause the process to discuss how important this is, and the best way to address it. Perhaps I can better illustrate what I mean by drafting a possible approach to these questions. There may be better questions to survey these issues, but these will give you an idea of what I mean. If we go out without them, I fear we may have constrained our survey to an unrealistic survey of demand. There is little doubt if everyone is asked how they would like to get to the beach, most will like the idea of parking right next to it! But we know that is unrealistic on peak days in Brewster, unless we want to significantly change the look and feel of the beach access, and the quality of life for people living and renting in the beach neighborhoods. Many thanks! Cheers, John It may not be possible to squeeze in enough parking close to beaches to cope with the highest demand on the busiest days days in July and early August. We will sometimes be faced with choices between alternatives something like those listed below. Please indicate which of the trade-offs best reflects your preference for Brewster. In regard to the introduction, I think it would be useful to include the goals as they will help to orient the survey taker. For example, after the first sentence insert a sentence along the lines of: "The goals of this planning process are to build climate resiliency, protect natural resources and manage peak summer demand for parking while safely meeting the needs of all beachgoers and those of the neighborhoods involved."
