HomeMy Public PortalAbout2019-03-19 minutesRecreation Services Committee Work Session Tuesday, March 19, 2019 Noon Wellness Center – Room 201 1299 Lafayette Street Jefferson City, MO 65101 The work session was called to order at Noon by Co-chair Andre Grinston Committee members present included Glenda Fry, Steve Duncan and Steve Buchholz. Commissioner Andre Grinston was present. Staff present included Missy Morarity, Steve Schellman, Aaron Grefrath, Kerri Gates, Julie Haupt, Angie Toebben, Todd Spalding, Alexis Kerman and Amy Shaw. Little League Update Aaron Grefrath stated that this year Parks and Recreation has merged with The Little League for the youth baseball leagues. He reported this was done because both leagues numbers were dwindling and staff felt there would be strength in numbers if the leagues were combined. Grefrath stated that assessments were done on March 3 and registration has been extended through March 20. Grefrath reported that total enrollments in the 8-10; 11-12; and 13-15 leagues are 197 and he also reported that a Boy’s and Girls Club team has been added in the 8-10 league. Linc Updates Aaron Grefrath stated that Linc memberships continue to grow and current memberships are at 701. He is hopeful to have 1,000 memberships by the end of October. Grefrath reported that the exercise classes are going well and he will be meeting with the fitness instructors in the next week to line out the summer classes. During the month of February free trial memberships were offered to City and Lincoln employees. This was done due to the water damage/mold issues in the City Annex fitness area. Grefrath stated he continues to work trying to implement a Silver Sneakers , Renew Active, and Prime Fitness programs. In closing, Grefrath stated we are staying busy with all the tournaments and gearing up for the month of April with the President’s Gala that will be followed by Lincoln graduation in May. Concession/Facility Supervisors Updates In the absence of Ben Herrick, Grefrath reported the Herrick is busy hiring Facil ity Supervisors and Concession staff for the upcoming spring season. Ice Arena Updates Kerri Gates stated that March has been a busy moth. The Annual Ice Show was held with 1,200 people for the three performances. The Mite Jamboree was held as well as the ISI Figure Skating Competition. Gates stated that staff is gearing up for all the summer programs and camps that will take place. Adult Sports Updates Missy Morarity reported that the men’s basketball leagues just finished on March 3 with 20 teams. She stated she is going to try and offer a summer basketball tournament for the men this summer. Morarity stated that the spring kickball league begins March 19 are five teams are registered. Spring adult softball will start on April 8 and twenty -one teams are registered. Summer softball registration is underway and play will begin in mid-May. Adult spring volleyball has begun and forty-three teams are registered. Summer sand and indoor volleyball will start play in late May. In closing, Morarity stated we have never had any disc golf leagues and she is looking to see what league play can be offered. She reported that pickleball is on the rise and they have actually formed a club. She has met with the club representative and they are looking to host some beginner clinics and the pickleball club has a tournament scheduled at the Lincoln courts on May 18-19. Youth Sports Updates Steve Schellman presented committee members with a handout on youth sports enrollments that outlined the youth sports programs and the enrollments in each. The committee then discussed the decline in certain sports and the decline was attributed to the various types of league/competitive are now available and how many kids are moving to one sport to focus their attention. Day Camps & Special Populations Updates Angie Toebben reported she has made some changes in the day camp program and this year she implemented a day camp registration fee to cover the cost of the online medical form and the camp shirt. On March 10 Toebben stated that a day camp registration event was held and a number of camps filled on opening day. Toebben stated she will be offering a spring break camp during spring break. She reported that twenty kids are enrolled. Toebben stated she is working to interview and hire for all the day camp positions. In closing, Toebben stated that the JC Park Stars, our special needs athletes, and they be traveling to St Joseph to participate. Swimming Pool Updates Julie Haupt reported that she is busy preparing for the lifeguard certification classes. She is working on bids to replace the fence around the Ellis-Porter pool. Also, Julie is working on a new slide feature for the baby pool area at Memorial. Special Events/Arts Update In the absence of Phil Stiles, Grefrath presented a report of events from January – June for committee member’s information. Ropes Course – Outdoor Rec Updates Alexis Kerman stated she is working to expand the ropes course and make it available to groups for field trips and team building activities. Kerman reported she is also responsible for the campground and is working on some special events for the campers during their stay. She is also looking at the possibilities for Wi-Fi at the campground. In closing, Kerman stated she is working on some biking programs for Jefferson City to try and get people outdoors. Program Surveys Grefrath stated that staff is working on surveys and they will send them out soon. Adjournment Being no other business, the Recreation Services Committee Work Session was adjourned by Co-chair Andre Grinston at 12:43 p.m. The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 18, 2019 – Noon at The Linc.
