New 9-8-8 Number Now in Effect!!
National Suicide Prevention Lifeline 1-800-273-TALK or 9-8-8
Launched in July, call or text 9-8-8, the new three-digit number for mental health, substance use, and suicidal
crises, to connect directly to mental health support during a crisis.
This new, shorter dialing code will help people more easily connect to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
network — over 200 local crisis call centers — for support during a crisis.
Former Riverdale resident Kevin Atwood founded Foster's Voice, a suicide awareness
organization, after his nineteen-year-old son Foster Atwood's suicide in 2017. Foster's
Voice has awarded over $10,000 in scholarships to high school seniors, spoken at over
30 schools, churches, youth groups, and other organizations (all free of charge), and
has provided funding for training and support to those who provide mental health
services. How can Foster's Voice help you? Visit their website at http://www.fosters
voice.org/ to learn more.
The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is the nation's largest grass-
roots mental health organization dedicated to building better lives for the
millions of Americans affected by mental illness. To learn more, visit
