HomeMy Public PortalAbout2022 0927 Acknowledgement - San and Fox TribesCITY ORWERDALEt IOWA ACKNOWLEDGEMENT WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this year as part of a series of proclamations. WHEREAS, on September 21St, 1832, the United States government and the confederated tribes of Sacs and Foxes came to an agreement that removed them from their ancestral homes, including those lands which now include Riverdale, and placed them in a 400 square mile reservation on the "loway River" bringing to an end the Black Hawk War. This land would also be sold to the US government at a later date, with all lands in Iowa being lost by 1842. WHEREAS, the negotiated peace cession was led on the US side by MG Winfield Scott, namesake of Scott County and Governor John Reynolds of Illinois, and on the Sac side by Kee-o-kuck, and the Fox side by Wau-pel-la, with Antoine LeClaire as interpreter. WHEREAS, as part of the negotiated treaty, the US, at the behest of the tribes, left Antoine LeClaire a parcel of land opposite Rock Island, at the head of the first rapids, where his home still stands. WHEREAS, as part of the negotiated treaty, Muk-ka-ta-mish-a-ka-kaik (Black Hawk) and his two sons, his brother, his two nephews, and two others were held hostage "for the future good conduct of the late hostile bands". WHEREAS, as part of the negotiated treaty, the US delivered to the mouth of the loway River: 35 cattle, twelve bushels of salt, thirty barrels of pork, and fifty barrels of flour, with an additional 6,000 bushels of corn delivered the following April. WHEREAS, as part of the negotiated treaty, the US paid the tribes $20,000/year for 30 years in payment for the lands, provided an additional black and gun smith shop for 30 years with all tools, iron, and steel; provided 40 kegs of tobacco, 40 barrels of salt annually for 30 years. WHEREAS, as part of the negotiated treaty the US paid local businessmen Farnham and Davenport $40,000 in repayment of debts owed by the tribes. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT, I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby acknowledge that September 21St is the day that Riverdale transferred hands from the Sac and Fox tribes to the US government, which is an unfortunate part of our history that today will only be acknowledged, but not proclaimed. FURTHER, I encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our region and those who first help establish our community.
