HomeMy Public PortalAbout1997/05/12 MAY 12, 1997 An Informal Meeting was held by the Mayor and Council of the INFORMAL MEETING Borough of Carteret on Monday, May 12, 1997, Carteret Middle School, 300 Carteret Avenue, Carteret, New Jersey. The following were noted present: ROLL CALL Mayor Peter J. Sica Councilmember Debra Bialowarczuk " John Dupont " James Failace " Jack Fazekas " Stan Gutowski Noted absent was Councilmember William Feingold. Also noted present was Borough Attorney Craig Coughlin. Statement of Meeting Notice was mailed to the Home News Tribune, STATEMENT OF The Star Ledger, and posted on the bulletin board on May 9,1997. MEETING NOTICE The purpose of the meeting was to meet with the Board of Education PURPOSE OF THE to discuss the Defeated School Budget. MEETING A representative from the Board of Education gave a presentation DISCUSSION about Program Initiatives. He said they would like to hire one guidance counselor to service both Columbus and Minue Schools. He also discussed increasing Remedial Services for the Middle School, and introducing a Distance Learning Lab in the High School and Elementary Level. The representative spoke about expanding the technology at the Middle School, updating the Computer Lab at the High School and enhancing Science instruction at the elementary level. He said we would like to reestablish a Drafting Program and Home Economics in the High School. He said we would like to complete the Multi Purpose Room in Columbus School and refinish the entrance and interior of the High School as well as repair the roof. The representative said he feels it is necessary to reestablish the High School Summer Program and he feels it is also important to research a site for an expanded Early Childhood program. Kathy Skobo said the Demonstrably Effective Prograrn will be used for the (inaudible) in our district. She said we will have Remedial Services in the Elementary Schools as well as Guidance Counselors. Ms. Skobo said we will expand Remedial Services in the Middle School. She said the Basic Skills instruction at the High School is a very successful program. However, Ms. Skobo said they will need funding for the Alternative Program which is designed for the at risk students. Assistant Superintendent Robert Eckert spoke about the Early Childhood Program. He said the first mission is to do site research. Mr. Eckert said we are looking to development a curriculum to meet the needs of all four (4) year olds in 2001. He said we need to reserve funds for a Distance Learning Program. He said they would like to establish Internet Access in the elementary schools and improve the technology at the Middle School level. Kenneth R. Weinheimer spoke about specific funding. He talked about funding that is available for Distance Learning, Early Childhood, Demonstrably Effective Program and Core Curriculum. Mr. Panigrosso said the Board Of Education has utilized the maximum amount of (inaudible) of the State Aid. He said if we did not have the State Aid, we would have had to make some critical choices. Mayor Sica asked for a list oftransfers made and anticipated transfers. Councilmember William Feingold was noted present at 8:15 P.M. Mr. panigrosso said if anyone on the Council would like to see the book/guide that he used to arrive at the figures he did, they are more than welcome. Councilmember Fazekas said he would like a list all the computer service contracts. He said he also wants (inaudible) of all the hardware and software. There being no further business or discussion, upon MMS&C by Councilmembers Failace and Gutowski and unanimous affirmative vote of the full membership present the meeting was adjourned at approximately 8:20 P.M.
