PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this
year as part of a series of proclamations.
WHEREAS, on 10 February 1762, the Seven Years' War, also known as the French and Indian War, between Great
Britain and the allies France and Spain was ended through the Treaty of Paris. Much of North America was shifted
back and forth between the colonial powers during this agreement, dividing the continent with the areas east of
the Mississippi becoming British territory and areas west of the Mississippi becoming French territory.
WHEREAS, at the same time, the secret Treaty of Fontainebleau was also being signed as France needed to repay
Spain for supporting them in the war which would cede all French territory to the Spanish.
WHEREAS, on 3 November 1762 the treaty was signed at Fontainebleau, on 13 November 1762, King Charles 111 of
Spain approved the treaty on behalf of Spain, and on 23 November 1762, French King Louis XV ratified the treaty
on behalf of France, formally ending French rule of the area.
WHEREAS, Riverdale, being in the western half of the French Louisiana Territory was ceded to Spain and would
remain in Spanish control for nearly 40 years.
WHEREAS, This agreement would completely end over 150 years of French colonialism on the North American
Continent and leave only Britain and Spain as colonial powers.
THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby proclaim
that November 23rd as
TREATY OF FONT IN BL A U D
In Riverdale, and encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our
region and those who first help establish our community.
