HomeMy Public PortalAbout2022 1122 Spanish Cession DayCITY OF RWERDALE PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this year as part of a series of proclamations. WHEREAS, on 30 November 1803, Spain returned Louisiana Territory to the French 3 years after the Third Treaty of San Ildefonso had actually transferred the lands to the French and months after the United States had purchased the territory through the Louisiana Purchase. WHEREAS, Spain was unhappy about the development, but seeing no way to defend the territory from the sale, reluctantly sent Territorial Governor Manuel de Salcedo and the Marques de Casa Calvo to The Cabildo to formally sign the paperwork transferring the lands to France, providing them to new Territorial Governor Pierre -Clement de Laussat. The Cabildo still stands at 701 Chartres Street in New Orleans. WHEREAS, Riverdale, being in the Louisiana Territory switched hands yet again. THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby proclaim that November 30th as SPANISH CESSION 0 4' v In Riverdale, and encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our region and those who first help establish our community.
