WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this
year as part of a series of proclamations.
WHEREAS, on 24 December 1815, the governments of Great Britain and the United States of America agreed to
end the War of 1812 via the Treaty of Ghent.
WHEREAS, the War of 1812 was fought here in our area, with one battle being fought directly at our southern
border on Campbell's Island. Lieutenant John Campbell's defeat by Sauk and British forces at the island left the
Quad City region in control of the Sauk for another 20 years until the Black Hawk War.
WHEREAS, As the war was also engaged in by many indigenous tribes, the agreement on the end of the war also
opened up many of their lands to settlement, including those lands which now include Riverdale.
THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby proclaim
that December 24`x' as
TREATY OF GHENT >� DAY
In Riverdale, and encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our
region and those who first help establish our community.
