HomeMy Public PortalAbout2022 1213 Iowa DayCITY Of RIVERDALE PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the City of Riverdale has over the years been under many jurisdictions which are being highlighted this year as part of a series of proclamations. WHEREAS, on 28 December 1846, Iowa, the 29th state, was admitted into the Union. 1i1HER.EAS, Iowa's admittance into the union was as a free state to counter the slave state of Florida which had been recently admitted. WHEREAS, With the Missouri River and Big Sioux River at its west and the Mississippi at its east, Iowa is the only US state that has two parallel rivers defining its borders. It would take until December 1871 for Iowa's current 99 county layout to be finalized. WHEREAS, Iowa is named for the loway or Iowa tribe who once inhabited many areas throughout Iowa, and most recently, the area along the banks of the Des Moines River. The loway people ceded the last of their lands in Iowa in 1838 with two major groups remaining in the United States. The Iowa Tribe of Oklahoma is centered in Perkins, OK and the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska is centered in Whitecloud, KS. The Iowa also refer to themselves as Bah Kho-Je or "people of the grey snow" a reference to a historic burned village covered in ash. WHEREAS, Iowa has contributed greatly to American society hosting the USA's only UNESCO City of Literature (Iowa City), was home to the first digital computer (Atanasoff), invented sliced bread (Rohwedder), is the largest corn producing state, is home to a president (Hoover), is home to the world food prize (Borlaug), is home to famous artists (Grant), is the only state with a 5 -dome capitol, and is home to the crookedest street in the world (Snake Alley). THEREFORE, be it resolved that I, Anthony Heddlesten, Mayor of the City of Riverdale, Iowa, do hereby proclaim that December 28th as IOW DAY In Riverdale, and encourage all staff, residents, and visitors to learn more about the history of the founding of our region and those who first help establish our community.
